Sorry, but your statement is misleading. YOU are only using a small amount. A computer would be a waste of money if it did not use up all RAM. In your case the operating system is optimising itself by utilising free RAM for File Cache (3.94GB) and other purposes since it's otherwise not needed by applications. This memory is considered free for application usage.

Look at App Memory, that's your usage, a small 2.37 GB of 8 GB. And seriously, learn how computers work. RAM exhaustion slows down an entire machine, less so on Mac due to compression techniques that activate before swapping, and SSD in fact makes swap relatively efficient memory.

I'm a senior systems analyst with this problem, tasked with large scale system design and software optimisation. The MVP responses in this topic to date are completely surprising and in some cases embarassing. As mentioned before a reproduction case is already provided. Give a developer a reproduction case like this and the issue is solved. In my experience the issue here is simply the right information getting to the wrong people whose lack of experience discards it, and in an attempt to be helpful they instead cause frustration and annoyance.

It is simply unfortunate this thread has reached where it is. I'll be abandoning all hope of a fix and removing notifications from this thread. I dare say it has been entertaining and I do appreciate the thought and intention of MVP posts is good, but unfortunately this issue is clearly above them.

I suggested that RAM may be a factor because 8 gig is not very much to work with, and that’s what cyntia has. Here’s a screen shot of my Macbok Pro. All I have open is a small workbook in Excel and my web browser. :

If I were to open a huge workbook and did a scroll with filters turned on, I would expect my system to slow to a crawl. One of the reasons I ask people to post example workbooks is so I can test on this Mac and compare it to one that has oodles of RAM. Often the comparison shows that RAM is the primary factor in slowing things down. If anyone is experiencing the scroll issue, watch the swap used (it should always be 0 bytes ideally) as you scroll a hefty worksheet with filters turned on. If you have multiple Macs and can compare memory, processor speed & graphics RAM and speed, you can narrow down whether the problem is Excel or the hardware.

The puzzlement between Office for Windows and Office for Mac speeds in Office has been around a long time. Office for Mac is built on a completely independent code base, which is obviously not as efficient. Microsoft has something they call a velocity engine (or something like that) in Excel for Windows that speeds things up. This feature is not in the Mac version. 

Here’s a good article about calculation speed, but it is not directly relevant to the scroll issue discussed in this thread, except that the Mac version doesn’t have the same processor and speed optimizations as Excel for Windows. 

Excel for Windows will always do better speed wise than Excel for the Mac using equivalent hardware and even in a virtual machine on a Mac. If upgrading RAM is what it takes to make your workbook work good on your Mac, then that’s the way to go. It may be more economical to use Boot Camp (doesn’t require a RAM upgrade) or a virtual machine with Parallels (the fastest VM) and go with Office 2013 for Windows but I would recommend a boost to 16 gig RAM for a VM.

You continue asking people about their system and parameter settings.

But this thread now is a nillion entries long and there are as well millions of proofs, that is can be reproduced by will by any guy with some artificial table generating values with a formula and then filtering.

also there are many many clear hints that the issue IS NOT the excel tabel etc:

i ponited out that the same mac running a VMWARE does not expose the issue within the guest operating system but within the host operating system.

This also means it is NOT an Issue of resources as TWO (host and giest)  operating systems have less netto resources, bute the GUEST still works fine.

BTW my MBP Retina with SSD and Full blown RAM suffers from the excel issues.

So let us stop that game and clearly get some advices form guys from microsoft, when the plan to do something.

And it still is the office 2011 which means outdated software.

SO I WILL NOT ANY MOTRE PROVIDE any answer to this threads as ONLY CURE is NEW MICROSOFT VERSION seriously treating the weaknesses.
