How do I turn off the Research paine when I open Word?

You will get a close symbol on the top right corner of the Research Pane, you can click on the close symbol and turn it off.

 Or you can click on the icon for Research Pane on the Toolbar at the top.

    Unless you're inadvertently "clicking" by touching the touchpad on a laptop, it's hard to see how you can inadvertently get Alt+click while typing.

    if you are using alt to do something else , such as using a macro - it can happen very easily.   It's wreaking havok with my productivity too.  I can't believe this problem was complained about in 2013 and is still herre in 2016.  Talk about deaf  CS, MS!

    It depends on which Office program your using, but in the case of OneNote, you go to file==> customize ribbon==> and uncheck the Review Panel, this will avoid the research panel popping up by mistake.
