This is how I solved the problem:

Go to File, Options, Proofing and click on Custom Dictionaries. Then pick the dictionary language. Then you will see your language in the list with a checked box next to it.  Remove the check and check it again. Then click OK and OK. And hopefully your problem will be solved.

This worked for me, I hope works for you too.

What you have still failed to understand is that no one who has posted in this thread (with the exception of an Indian contractor) works for Microsoft. My customers are those who patronize the business described at http://home.earthlink.net/~wordsintotype. We are all volunteers here, just other users like yourself, some with a little more knowledge about some aspects of Word, but many of us quite ignorant about large areas of it. It seems that this particular thread has not attracted the interest of anyone more knowledgeable than those who have responded, not surprising since the proofing tools seem to be one of the less well documented areas of Office (and they are Office Tools, shared among apps, which means that Word users are even less likely to be experts on them).

Regrettably, Suzanne, I am not one of your largest customers and I don't have the advantage of contract support. I am sorry if you misread what I wrote to mean I was claiming to be one - I wasn't, I was just posing the question 'what if "

My problem remains, and I have no idea how to get it solved and it seems from what I've read above this is an ongoing problem that is shared with many of your customers. Surely, there must be someone within the organisation who has the answer? If only you could get it and spread the word, it would do a lot to help.

The biggest problem I have with this is that while it works fine in some Word documents and in sending emails, it doesn't in other Word documents or in Outlook Adress book. Weird!

I hope you have some answers. Thanks for Mr. Ballmer's email, I will email him as we do have a number of friends in common as I lived in WA for 6 years and got to know a lot of great people, including many from Microsoft.

I'm not sure why you say the article doesn't cover Word 2010, as it certainly does.

By all means email Steve Ballmer (steveb at microsoft dot com). I'm sure he will be happy to tell you where to go.

If you were any employee (much less a senior decision maker) at any of Microsoft's largest clients, you would have contract support service.

Dear Suzanne, I am sorry you felt I was being rude. Perhaps it's a question of Brits & Americans being seperated by a common language. I do admit I took my frustrations out on you.

Of course, you could not know that I have been struggling to find a solution to this problem for several months and it seems there is no clear answer from anyone. However, I was hoping that Microsoft would present the best bet for a solution.

Also, Dan, I never said I was one of Microsoft's largest customers, what I actually said was

" For all you know I could be a senior decision maker at one or more of Microsoft's largest clients." Dan, the operative words here are 'I could be'. There was really no need for you to get so agressive and unhelpful. I have a legitimate problem here and I thought you were here to help people like me solve such problems, not belittle them because they don't have your computer skills.
