Pre-Loaded Microsoft Office Starter 2010 Will Not Start up

Error message says "There was a problem setting up Microsoft Office Starter 2010: There was a problem setting up Microsoft Office. Try running setup again. If problem continues, contact Microsoft Product Support."

I tried again before and after reboots -- still no go.

What do I do now?

I went into REGEDIT and the values were already set to %USERPROFILE%...... and I noticed there wasn't really anything to do to "fix" it... I found a fairly simple step and it fixed my pre-loaded microsoft office excel... here's what I did:

Click the start button, then control panel.
locate and click on the PROGRAMS AND FEATURES icon.
Scroll down and locate the MICROSOFT OFFICE STARTER program. Click ONCE to select it.
At the top right above program name, you'll see " Organize, Uninstall, Change "
CLICK CHANGE
When the UAC pops up, click yes then you will see a box that says "Repair Microsoft Office Click-to-run"
Click yes again.
That's all.... :)

( I didn't check the box to remove all office user settings and it fixed my problem)

It's a no-go. Dell says that Microsoft provides support for their products. That's probably "it" for them in the future.

So, unless Microsoft helps, it's a lost cause. We'll see if they actually support what they sell.

The simple solution would be to just buy the Microsoft Word element that I need, but if I do that I'll feel as if I was cheated since I didn't get the product for which I already paid, so I'll keep working this for a while.

Try editing this registry key to see if this helps:

Launch the registry editor as Administrator.

a. Click on the Windows Start menu, Type "Regedit" without the quotation marks. Right click on Regedit and choose "Run as administrator" and click Yes on the UAC dialog.

Back up (Export) and then rename the Registry Key if applicable.

a. Navigate to [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]

b. Look at the AppData key in the right pane of the registry window. If the Data column contains only "%APPDATA%, then proceed. If not, then do not go any further. Close the registry editor.

c. Click on the AppData key in the right pane of the registry window, which should highlight the key.

d. Then click on File, Export and choose a location and name of the saved original registry key and click the Save button. Don't forget where you saved it!

e. Double-click on the "AppData" key in the right pane of the registry window.

f. In the "Value Data" field, change "%APPDATA%" to “%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming" and click on OK

3- Reboot the machine

4- Attempt to re-initialize Office Starter again

Hi, I have a pre-installed Microsoft word starter on my computer that has been working fine but today I have not been able to open word documents downloaded from the web or open any documents in my files that have always been opened with word, it'll only let me open a file if I'm actually in Microsoft word starter. Thing is when I follow the instructions to repair word starter I get an error message that first says 'The action cannot be completed. Try the action again. If the problem continues contact Microsoft Product Support'. So I try the action again and it says 'Fatal error while trying to stop the task'. Do you have any idea what this means? Thank you.

I think that this kind of instruction is not a good thing to put on the site because "newbies" can damage their machines if they make a mistake in the registry. What we need is for MICROSOFT to develop a fix for this COMMON ERROR and deploy it as a "Microsoft FIXit" downloadable file.

The error that pops up when you start Microsoft Excel Starter is this:

"Microsoft Excel Starter 2010 cannot be opened. Try again or repair the product in Control Panel."

For those people on this board who are such "newbies" that they don't know how to repair a file from the Control Panel, do this:

1. Open "Programs and Features".

2. Select your Program to repair. (Microsoft Office in this case).

3. When it pops up to remove the program DON'T PANIC. Just select "REPAIR' from the menu at the top of the square and it will fix it.

Now for my closing remark to the programmers at Microsoft:

Constantly fixing this program a few times a day every time I want to open Excel is a pain in the fingers. It's a time waster too... of course. It is a problem I never had when I didn't have my EXCEL coupled with OFFICE; a program I simply do not use or want. It is an over hyped program that costs WAY TOO MUCH for my at home computer needs.

So either give us back the old form of EXCEL, decoupled from OFFICE, or fix the start up problem for the free Starter package PLEASE. I still haven't found out if "Starter" is going to remain free forever or if I will be backed into a corner and hit up for a couple hundred dollars to buy office. I guarantee you I will find another way to open a spreadsheet.
