Excel 2010 crashes when using print preview button and adding headers/footers

The product team have identified a possible way to avoid this problem.

They are currently testing it but have given me permission to suggest it here too, so that you can see if it solves the problem for you. 

File > Options > Advanced > General : uncheck Enable multi-threaded processing .

Please try it and let us know whether or not it avoids the problem for you.

Hi Bill and others who read this thread.

I tried this and it didn't make any difference for me.

I also download SP1 for Office today (10th August 2011) with the hope that the problem had been addressed and of course my hopes were dashed...........

Is there any other way we can put pressure on Microsoft to resolve this issue? I imagine there must be many hundreds of people with Windows 7, Office 2010 & an HP printer

Thank you Alex for the disabled add ins fix

Since building the users pc other "techies" had played with print drivers and printers.

Your fix was good as her printers both network and local were in the disabled list.

One thing I found afterwards is any spreadsheets that had been created that had crashed before, have to be opened (then they crash) and re opened again = as if excel has held some "I will crash and burn" shred file. Once cleared and reopened; then they print OK (obviously creating some shred file saying you wont crash and burn)

There is barely a temporary fix. Remembering to turn off multi-threading every time you try to print is not a fix. Most people have been patient but there has been no update on this issue for a long time. I have a friend with an old copy of Excel and I guess I will go back to that or try Open Office. It feels like the bad old days when you click save every 2 minutes just so you don't lose too much work...

I am a new visitor to this post with the same problem.

I dealt with the issue by saving constantly and once it crashed i would close out and reopen. Well, that, although tedious, got me by until finally it crashed my hard drive. My final Excel crash and close out left me with a humming sound (which ended requiring a new hard drive).

I haves since changed my default printer to OneNote 2010 and disable the multi thread (as per these posts), so far it seems to work, bit ridiculous to have to deal with.

Is there a more permanent fix?
