Excel 2010 crashes when using print preview button and adding headers/footers

I am using Office 2010 Professional with Windows 7.  The installation was successful and I have no other issues with any Office programs except Excel 2010.  Whenever I use the print preview button on the Quick Access Toolbar to check the print preview before printing, or use headers/footers to add these before printing, Excel crashes and forces a restart when I next go to save the document.  It may allow me to do up to 3 print previews before I go to save the document and it crashes and attempts to recover the data or just shuts Excel down after a few times.

All other Office program functions work fine and I have checked my printer driver with a Microsoft utility and it reports no issues.

Can anyone help?

    I just launched a new instance of Excel, and cleared the multi-threaded setting. Went into print and did nothing for a minute. But as soon as I tried to scroll through the Print Preview it crashed again. It does seem like if I remember to clear that setting and just don't touch the Print Preview at all, then I can at least print the document without crashing now. I will try to remember to do this while waiting for a real fix. I will just save less trees if I need to print a file in order to make sure that it is formatted the way I want it to be...

    Hi Laurie

    Another user (on another thread) has pointed out that the "enable multi-threaded processing" setting does not "stick" between runs of Excel. 

    Can I ask - when it crashed in preview had you re-started Excel since clearing the setting?

    If you are not certain, please could I ask you to try once more, clearing the setting and then repeating the preview test?

    Just changed that setting, and tried printing a spreadsheet that always crashes for me.  I printed it once with no issue.  However, as soon as I went to the print preview and scrolled through the report to see what other pages looked like, then it crashed again.  I sent the error report via the normal dialog, but I also have a screenshot I can send if that would help.  This bug is the bane of my existence…

    I will be happy to try anything they can suggest and if a remote debug session would help I am amenable to that.

    HOT OFF THE PRESS....

    The product team have identified a possible way to avoid this problem.

    They are currently testing it but have given me permission to suggest it here too, so that you can see if it solves the problem for you. 

    File > Options > Advanced > General : uncheck Enable multi-threaded processing .

    Please try it and let us know whether or not it avoids the problem for you.
