OneNote 2010 can't connect to Windows Live

I have Office 2010 which is updated on my Windows 7 {64bit} on my computer. The OS is updated too.

I bought a Windows 7 phone {Samsung Focus} and I created a Windows Live account plus I installed Live Essentials on my computer. If I'm correct, I need to use Skydrive to sync OneNote between my computer and phone.

The problem is that OneNote can't connect to Live. I've been trying for days. I have 6 notebooks in OneNote. I choose to share on the web, the web location is Windows Live. After the pop up of contacting server comes up I get the message " Unable to connect to Windows live. Below this there is just the icon "Share Notebook" which is grayed out.  I've tried this with all of the notebooks. I have tried this while my Live account is open on the browser. As I understand a login window should pop up, however this never pops up. OneNote on its own is deciding to locate and log on with the credentials.

I'm going crazy over this, any help is appreciated!

I have figured this out, after trying all the things above.  It came down to one thing, two-factor authentication.  If you have this enabled, to sign into OneNote on your PC you have to use your App Password, not your actual password to your Live account.  So log into your Live account, Click on Security Info, and then click create a new app password.  It will then display the current, or new, app password.  Now use that password that it gives you in OneNote and everything should sign right in.  Now I am able to sync all my files from OneNote to my phone without any issues, without messing with IE settings, and all that other stuff.

Hi There,

Not sure if you have resolved this issue yet!

I recently had the same issue on my Windows 7 64-bit pc, when I tried to connect to my Sky Drive account through One Note I was experiencing 'Can't Connect Error', Tried restarting WebClient and cached credentials this did'nt work, found out this was not related to any services but related to IE settings, by performing a reset of all settings and advanced settings this corrected the issue, I am now able to connect Sky Drive via One Note with out any problems

    It worked for me also!

    Open internet explorer,

    Go to "Internet Options" from the Tools menu,

    Click on the "Advanced" tab,

    Click the "Reset" button near the bottom and BAM, your good to go!

    This allowed me to connect to my windows live account and get all my Onenote notebooks synchronized.

    Some potential progress to report for anyone reading this...

    I went to work today and connected to my work wired network and launched Windows Live Photogallery.

    It prompted me to log in, and I entered my id/pw, and it failed the way Onenote failed on Windows Live log in.

    However, the log-in error dialog was different from the one in Onenote.  The Photogallery dialog included an option not suggested in the Onenote Windows Live log-in failure dialog

    • to connect, log in while connected, and select the "Remember my password" option.

    Now, every time I've ever seen the Windows Live log-in dialog in Onenote, I've selected that Remember me and Log me in Automatically options, so this didn't seem like it was anything new, but I figured what the heck.  I disconnected from my work wired network, connected to a consumer wireless network w/direct internet access, launched Photogallery and used the "Log In' button at the top right of the Photogallery app window to log into Windows Live, selecting both the remember me and the automatically log me in options on that dialog.  Log in went fine.  I then launched Onenote, and it sync'd fine (as it always has when at home or on the wireless network at work).

    Then I rebooted, and connected only to the work wired network.  I opened Onenote and made some changes and notebooks sync'd w/out error or any log-in request!

    I'm home now, and will return to work later today to test it again.  I'm going to shut my laptop down fully this time (rather than only a restart) and start it up and see if it continues to work. If it does, it appears that a Windows Live log-in from Photogallery (or likely any other of the Windows Live app would have worked) somehow got around this issue of Windows Live thinking there is no network access for log-in when there actually is on my work network, and thus both Photogallery and Onenote (and I presume other Win Live apps) can now get past the Windows Live log-in issue and use the fully available internet connection...why this log-in button option isn't in Onenote I'm not sure.  Photogallery has a "Log-in" button available, I find no such option anywhere in Onenote - maybe that needs to be added to the app.

    So it seems that this is an issue w/the Windows Live log-in process, not the app's ability to access the internet in general - the fact that the app syncs fine as soon as the log-in issue is passed seems to indicate that the only thing blocking the sync was the Windows Live log-in, not that the app was in general unable to see the internet connection available to it.  Hope that's clear...
