internet links not working in Outlook 2010. "General Failure. The URL Was: http://frustration.com, etc. Application not Found"

I've tried all the solutions I've been able to find re 2007, etc.  None has worked.  I reset explorer to default internet browser, re-linked all file associatinos such as HTML, SHTML, etc. to internet explorer.  Nothing works.  This really is frustrating.  All the great features of Outlook 2010 are more or less off set by this bug.  Has anyone found a way to fix this?  Thank you.

Click ‘Start’ and type ‘Run’ in the ‘Search programs and files’ box above ‘Start’ and hit ‘Enter’. In the Run window type ‘regedit’ (without quotes) and click ‘Ok’. Now navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxURL\shell\open\ddeexec

At the right pane double click ‘(Default)’ and clear the ‘Value data:’ field and click ‘Ok’.

I have had a problem for a long time where outlook was unable to open hyperlinks -- it would always ask you for what to open it with polluting the registry with a number of strange extensions (from the end of the url).  I dealt with it until a link had .exe on the end (it was an internal download link) which then caused windows to forget what to do with .exe files. 

Citrix had a similar issue and had the magic register key set after resetting the browser associations,...

Copy this to a .reg file and import it to complete the association.

    There were two - Chrome has been uninstalled.

    IE was the default, so I changed it and tried Outlook - same error message

    Tried closing Outlook and all browsers and opening Outlook again - same error message

    Closed Outlook, changed the default (custom screen) to Firefox

    Opened Outlook, tried html link - same error message

    Tried the same thing opening both browsers first. -same think

    In Outlook Help it will open hyperlinks to the help file but not ones that check Microsoft websites. The error is "Error Launching Browser"

    This is one persistent problem!

    Chrome again). Make that browser default (and check if your links

    work) and change it back to Internet Explorer.
