internet links not working in Outlook 2010. "General Failure. The URL Was: http://frustration.com, etc. Application not Found"

I've tried all the solutions I've been able to find re 2007, etc.  None has worked.  I reset explorer to default internet browser, re-linked all file associatinos such as HTML, SHTML, etc. to internet explorer.  Nothing works.  This really is frustrating.  All the great features of Outlook 2010 are more or less off set by this bug.  Has anyone found a way to fix this?  Thank you.

Click ‘Start’ and type ‘Run’ in the ‘Search programs and files’ box above ‘Start’ and hit ‘Enter’. In the Run window type ‘regedit’ (without quotes) and click ‘Ok’. Now navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxURL\shell\open\ddeexec

At the right pane double click ‘(Default)’ and clear the ‘Value data:’ field and click ‘Ok’.

I have had a problem for a long time where outlook was unable to open hyperlinks -- it would always ask you for what to open it with polluting the registry with a number of strange extensions (from the end of the url).  I dealt with it until a link had .exe on the end (it was an internal download link) which then caused windows to forget what to do with .exe files. 

Citrix had a similar issue and had the magic register key set after resetting the browser associations,...

Copy this to a .reg file and import it to complete the association.

    So, I didn't quite give up and tried one more thing...

    With Internet Explorer set as the default browser, I ran procmon while trying to click on a link in Outlook noticed Outlook.exe was trying to open but was not finding CLSID {17FE9752-0B5A-4665-84CD-569794602F5C}

    I searched the registry for that GUID and the only places I was seeing that GUID appear was in a "DelegateExecute" string under all of the "...\shell\open\command" keys with default pointing to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

    So I went through and manually deleted all occurances of that DelegateExecute string that had the value {17FE9752-0B5A-4665-84CD-569794602F5C} and finally it started working, yay!

    Now I finally got Internet Explorer working as my default browser.

    I originally wanted Internet Explorer to be my default browser but I just can’t seem to get this to work so I've given up and I’m now going to use Chrome as my default browser.

    If I go into Internet Explorer and choose it to be my default browser then when I click on a URL in Outlook I get the General Failure. The URL was: Class not registered.

    However, if I go into Chrome and choose it to be my default browser then when I click on a URL in Outlook it brings up the URL in Chrome just fine.

    I've tried switching the default browser back and forth several times now between Chrome and IE with the same result.

    I tried the regsvr32 ExplorerFrame.dll but that didn't fix it.

    I tried repairing my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit but that didn't fix it.

    I tried running KB 310049 fix it and also tried their manual registry suggestion but that didn't fix it.

    I tried resetting the Internet Explorer Defaults but that didn't work (both using the fix it in KB 923737 and also tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab -> click Reset... button, click OK).

    I tried Control Panel -> Default Programs -> Set program access and computer defaults -> and made sure HTTP and HTTPS protocols were already pointing to Internet Exploer, but still doesn't work.

    I tried turning off and turning back on the Internet Explorer 9 feature in Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows reatures on or off, but that didn't work.

    I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2010 SP1 but that didn't work.

    I tried running the suggested registry script but that didn't work.

    I am not up to trying to reinstall Windows 7.

    So, I've just given up and going to use Chrome as my default browser
