internet links not working in Outlook 2010. "General Failure. The URL Was: http://frustration.com, etc. Application not Found"

I've tried all the solutions I've been able to find re 2007, etc.  None has worked.  I reset explorer to default internet browser, re-linked all file associatinos such as HTML, SHTML, etc. to internet explorer.  Nothing works.  This really is frustrating.  All the great features of Outlook 2010 are more or less off set by this bug.  Has anyone found a way to fix this?  Thank you.

Click ‘Start’ and type ‘Run’ in the ‘Search programs and files’ box above ‘Start’ and hit ‘Enter’. In the Run window type ‘regedit’ (without quotes) and click ‘Ok’. Now navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxURL\shell\open\ddeexec

At the right pane double click ‘(Default)’ and clear the ‘Value data:’ field and click ‘Ok’.

I have had a problem for a long time where outlook was unable to open hyperlinks -- it would always ask you for what to open it with polluting the registry with a number of strange extensions (from the end of the url).  I dealt with it until a link had .exe on the end (it was an internal download link) which then caused windows to forget what to do with .exe files. 

Citrix had a similar issue and had the magic register key set after resetting the browser associations,...

Copy this to a .reg file and import it to complete the association.

    What OS are you using Vista or 7?  Do you know the version of FF you where using when this issue happen on your system?

    Report back if you have to apply this fix again for any reason.

    So... I fixed mine by going into IE (9) -> Tools -> Internet Options and set the IE to the default browser.  Then I could open links from outlook.

    So then I closed down firefox and re-opened it... then it prompted to be the default browser, which I said Yes to.

    Now it works fine!

    Update:  I have recently updated for FF 8, 8.01 and 9.01 and still do not have the problem that I once originally did.  I don't know if Mozilla (FireFox) fixed something or by me applying the fix twice actually has stuck and I don't get the error message any more from Outlook 2010 Professional.

    If anything thing changes I will come back and update.
