I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need
The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag
Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760
I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

You have a lot of grouping going on with textboxes and I can't yet tell what all is causing the problem, so changes to the document and a re-save will still give you the problem, but you will at least be able to open it.
If I find anything, I will let you know.

Tony! You seem like the go to man on this thread. I tried your fix, but it wasn't working. Is there any chance you might be able to check my document for me? I spent hours on the equations and graphs and would hate to redo it but can't figure out the xml problems. Let me know if you need me to send the file to somewhere other than uploading.com.

Just as a heads up, in the short term, it will have to be a combination of running the FixIt solution (once it's available) and then trying to correct the document contents.
The FixIt solution gets the document into a state where Word will open the file. Then workaround #1 from the blog should help, since most documents I've seen with this issue are resolved from corrupting again by grouping the textboxes. Doesn't seem to be anything specific, just make sure all textboxes are grouped to something.
