Can't open Word File because of end tag/start tag mismatch error...need XML help!

I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need

  The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag

Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760

I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

Going forward if you or anyone else comes across this issue again, we have a FixIt solution created that should address this problem.  You can go to the following KB article and it should give you the details about how you can correct these documents.

    Hi StellaKong,

    I now see how you have created that graphic and begin to understand why Word has so much trouble. I suggest you try compressing the pictures behind the individual elements.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I was constantly reloading this webpage to see if someone will answer my question.

    I replaced the old document.xml with your modified one and renamed the file extension back to .docx

    MS 2010 was able to open exactly as it was!!

    My lab report is due really soon. I really appreciate the quick reply!!!!

    Also, how do I know this won't happen again? Should I save multiple copies of it? Also, What was the problem? Was it because I had too many equations?

    As you only uploaded the document.xml part, I am unable to verify that Word can open your document, but I believe I have fixed it.

    Well....

    The document was about 20MB in size and the corruption - not your fault - was with a graphic in the table in Appendix VI. When I had fully repaired the document it mushroomed to over 50MB - too big for me to put on my SkyDrive. I removed the graphic and it shrunk to 10MB, and that is the document that I have uploaded to http://cid-142722a74d07b70e.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/02%5E_8998%5E_HW%5E_2%20-%20Almost%20Fixed.docx#resId/142722A74D07B70E!140. I can let you have the graphic separately if you need, but I suspect it may cause you more problems.

    Just for information - the graphic was anchored to the first row of a table hanging down over the central column - except that on my machine the table split over a page boundary and the graphic didn't, so I didn't see the effect you were trying to convey.
