I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need
The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag
Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760
I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

As Yves said, your document has been corrupted by something outside Word.
From a quick look, the first 4k bytes all seem to have been OR'd with 0x0f. This is not what would be expected simply from saving to removable media and I wonder if you have some malware on your machine.

Hi, i´ve got the same problem guys. Ive tried to solve it myself but i cant find nor fix mismatch errors in the xml file. I would be very grateful for any help and it seems to be a matter of minutes for you guys who understand it.

It's not about a mismatch, your archive is corrupt. Part of your main document is gone forever. There is no way Word can recover from that. The most likely cause of this error is that you tried to save your document directly to some form of removable media rather than saving to your hard disk first and then copying the file.

I'm working on my Master's Thesis with Office 2007, and I've lost 20 hours of work due to what seems to be an Office 2007 bug.. Anyways, here's what happened when I tried to open the file (text below is copied from another thread with the same problem, and, with no solution):
"First: The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. 2 options : [OK] or [Details >>>>] The file is corrupt and cannot be opened.
After pushing [OK]: Word found unreadable content in "file name". Do you want to recover the contents of this document? If you trust the source of this document, click Yes.[Yes] or [No] ([No] option ends messages)
[Yes] results in final message: The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. [OK] or [Details>>>] Microsoft Office cannot open this file because some parts are missing or invalid.
After pushing [OK], message string is done and a blank, new document sits open to start writing. It is not my original document but instead just a new sheet."
I tried to look at the document.xml but I wasn't able to - "The archive is corrupted". Really not that familiar with xml environment..

There seemed to be some folk here with a similar problem as mine, although the majority of cases of this thread are different. I've surfed the net for hours without a solution and I have to admit I'm beginning to get rather desperate here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your archive is corrupted, it has nothing to do with Word. The most likely cause if this type of error is the direct saving to removable media as Doug Robbins pointed out.
I did a quick check and I noticed that your footnotes (all 117), comments (1) and images (1) can be recovered (rename the docx to zip and extract the files). However, your main document seems to be lost.
