I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need

The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag

Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760

I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

You're welcome Catherine.

Going forward if you or anyone else comes across this issue again, we have a FixIt solution created that should address this problem.  You can go to the following KB article and it should give you the details about how you can correct these documents.

thank you so much! the file is recovered and it works just fine. The only problem is, i dont know how to prevent such a problem in the future. Maybe I should always save a copy that works.

Seems like you guys are able to help me. I have the same promblem: when I try to open the word document it says:

The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag

      Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 35058

I'd like to fix it myself, but i have no clue what to do with the xml file. Maybe someone can have a look at it and try to fix it. I would really appreciate that!

I posted an attempt at http://www.sendspace.com/file/fd70sj

But you should provide the full docx file. If you only provide the document.xml, we are missing the means to verify/validate the document.

Thanks a lot! and sorry for the simpleness of the solution, but I know nothing about xml programming. I followed internet instructions on how to "unzip" the docx file but didnt know how to find mismatch errors, or to fix them etc. I really appreciate your help!
