Can't open Word File because of end tag/start tag mismatch error...need XML help!

I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need

  The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag

Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760

I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

Going forward if you or anyone else comes across this issue again, we have a FixIt solution created that should address this problem.  You can go to the following KB article and it should give you the details about how you can correct these documents.

    love2019 also started a separate thread for this (http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wordcreate/thread/dd015728-2bea-4a0f-b041-38d8fc81821d) and the "i" was a hyperlink to the document. I did spot it, and have fixed it, but it could have been clearer!!

    You can see that they don't because when you select a file within a Zip/Compressed folder, and show the right-click menu, it's significantly different from the menu you would see if the same file was in a regular, uncompressed file folder. And that's quite a big deal if you are dealing with these things quite often, but don't have the time or the skills to do anything about it. Does anyone know any ways to get Windows to treat compressed folders much more like ordinary folders? (Other than copying the contents to ordinary folders!)

    I'm having problems opening my paper for English class. I did final touches on it last night and saved as I normally would. I arrived at school this morning and tried to open my file (via flash drive) in the computer lab @ school and almost fell out of my chair when it said file corrupted. After exlaining the situation to my professor she gave me until Monday to get the assignment to her. My file saved on my computer says the same thing. I tried to fix it myself but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. Pleaseee help. Not sure which link I was supposed to copy so I did both. Thank You in Advance...

    Never save Word documents directly to flash drives. Always store them to your hard disk, then copy the result to your flash drive.

    In your case, part of the document.xml file got corrupted which is actually the file containing most of what you typed. I tried to retrieve as much as possible, but it isn't all that much. The result, only 2 paragraphs, together with what I was able to retrieve from your document.xml, can be downloaded from http://www.sendspace.com/file/jl8lh1 .
