I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need
The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag
Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760
I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

Should stop wasting time trying to recover it and just re-do my work? From what I'm understanding, this is pretty much a no-hope issue?

I unfortunately don't Brandon. I have no idea what happened. I worked on it at my work computer (Windows 7), then I put it on a usb drive. I remember ejecting it. Then at home, I tried to open it on my laptop (Windows Vista) and the error appeared.
This file is giving you the same error message as the others, but the problem is different. Like you mentioned, the file "document.xml" is corrupt.
Do you have a previous version of the file or any idea what was changed in the document before it started giving you this error message?

I have a corrupt Word file too. The error says ""the name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag" just like all the others....
I've tried rebuilder documents with no success. I've also tried changing it to a zip file to access the xml file, but the xml file is corrupt as well.
