converting Publisher 2010 to PDF causes font color change

Howdy!  I'm using Win 7, Office 2010 and Acrobat 8.  I can convert word files to PDFs with no problem, using the Office built-in PDF conversion (NOT the "Print to" option, because I need the hyperlinks to be active).  However, when I convert from Publisher 2010 to a PDF, all is well except any color text (different fonts, including hyperlink text) changes to a very dark grey, almost black.  The colors that I'm using are a dark red, and the default blue hyperlink font.  The fonts I'm using are standard Arial and Perpetua, which are defaults.

I've tried lots of troubleshooting, but nothing seems to work.  Most of the online help I've found has to do with converting to pdf by using the print driver option, which of course won't work for me, as I need the hyperlinks active.

Last time this happened, I was still using Office 2007, and was able to use the Adobe pdfmaker option instead of the "added on" built in Office pdf converter.  That corrected the problem.  However, now the Adobe pdfmaker doesn't seem to be an option, as I understand that there is some sort of conflict that keeps it from working correctly.

Any ideas how to keep my fonts from changing to black/grey?

I think I found the answer to this:  Even though you are not printing it, if you have a color printer, set that as the default printer, then Save As PDF and it will hopefully work.  All font colors and links should be preserved. 

When I change my default printer back to my black and white laser, it stops working as desired.

This problem only started to happen to me after I installed a color printer.

    I don't have a color printer - but was still having this problem.  I installed a 'fake' color printer, by manually installing a color printer driver (Add Local Printer, Select a color printer driver from one of the HP printers)

    I set my default printer to this newly installed fake printer, and now I get color PDF's saved out of 2010 Publisher.

    Thanks for your post. I tried switching to a color printer as a default and found your solution worked for me.

    I would still like to see Publisher maintain the font colors when the publication is converted to pdf regardless of the default printer, and hope that is changed in the future.

    Thanks for the replies.  David is correct, Primopdf, and most of the others that I've tried, don't preserve the links, because they seem to be basically just glorified printer drivers.

    David, Word 2010 does not cause the problem...it converts fine, using the built-in PDF converter (both in "Save As" and in the "Save and Send/Create PDF" modes.  So far, it's just a Publisher 2010 problem.

    I'm not sure what Mary means when she says to try Acrobat, as my original post stated that the Acrobat pdfmaker add-in doesn't work with Office 2010.  It installs, and is an option in Word, but when clicked it does nothing.  It doesn't even appear in Publisher, at least not on the menus or ribbon.  It does show under COM add-ins, and it's not disabled, but it doesn't show in the menus or ribbon.  I can't open any Office 2010 file from within Acrobat, as I get an error that pdfmaker is not installed correctly.

    While researching another problem with acrobat conversions from Office 2010 (last week I was unable to get Word 2010 to convert to pdf while maintaining the relative nature of hyperlinks.  Solved it by using OpenOffice to do the conversion, believe it or not.  However, Openoffice won't open Publisher files), I found a lot of material online addressing some sort of Adobe incompatibility with Office 2010, along with the promise that adobe is "working on it" <G>

    In the short term, I need to solve this Publisher problem.  Do you know of any 3rd party pdf converters that DO preserve hyperlinks, and will work with Office 2010?

    Hi Mary,

    Just a FYI. Hyperlinks are not preserved when you use www.primopdf.com , so that is not an option in this case. I don't remember, but the pdf tool that Don used did preserve the links, but it was not a freebie.

    I am curious. Do you perhaps have Word 2010 installed? Does the pdf add-in strip out the font colors when you create a pdf from Word or is this just a Publisher issue?
