I upgraded from Office 2007 to 2010 two weeks ago. Whenever I open up documents in Print Layout View that were created under earlier versions of Word (2000, 2003, 2007), Word replaces several of the fonts with something that looks like Arial bold.Sometimes it changes just the title fonts, sometime the entire body font--it's not always the same phenomenon in each document.
The Font window on the Home tab still shows the name of the original font being used in the document, but the screen does not show that font--it just shows whatever it replaces the font with. Repeat: even though the screen in showing a different font, the Font window on the Tab Screen shows the name of the font the document should be showing.
When I change to Draft View, the fonts all display properly, but I need the correct fonts in the Print Layout to show because the bogus font that Word substitutes throws off the accuracy of what I'm looking at.
Is anyone else having this problem?

I solved this problem by saving the troublesome file in what 2010 calls "compatability mode>"
Eutactic, I finally tried this solution. I really was not comfortable deleting everything under \Office, but after backing up the registry, I gave it a try. So far it seems to have worked. I will be finishing an important project during the week, so I will have daily opportunities to see how this holds up.

I believe I have solved this problem by simply backing up and deleting all the registry values in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office. Obviously this is an extreme approach that wiped my preferences, but it appears to have done the trick.
Hi Chris, hi Pete, hi all, unfortunately cannot agree: this problem is not necessarily related to the graphics driver nor to documents in compatibility mode alone.
I've changed to the latest graphic driver (ATI, Vista), re-installed the OS (changed btw. from Vista to Windows 7) while the problem persists. I've worked with documents in compat.-mode or the native 2010-format and always expirienced the same problems.
Since I do track many Blogs related to this problems and I do always find the same questions and (unfortunately useless) attempts for fixing it, I wonder if anyone knows a way to contact Microsoft and report this problem as (a serious) bug.
Surely: almost every suggestion leads to a temporary result (e.g. max/min, scroll up/down, change printer a.s.o.) --- but there's no real solution so far.
The problem isn't even *reliably* replicable; only a (whole) clutch of 'triggers' --- oddly enough, sometimes the same that resolves the problem (e.g. max/min, scroll up/down, change printer a.s.o.) ---, are known.
I think the only way to solve this serious bug is to make a comprehensive bug-report to the appropriate site @ Microsoft. To do this it is necessary to assemble
It might even be possible, this effort leads to a real solution, without the help of Microsoft.
Is anyone willing to contribute? Does 'Answers' provide any collaboration tool to accomplish this task (unfortunately I don't find any) OR should we switch to another forum/blog/tool for systematic assembly of bug-reports?

To solve this bug, I've done so far:
e.g.: template-handling, page-layout-settings, hardware-graphic-acceleration (on/off), font formatting features a.s.o. 3. opened/saved documents in compatibility-mode (or native 2010-mode) 4. installed fonts directly via the Windows font folder VS. working with my font-management-software (Extensis Suitcase) 5. installed a right-to-left font in Word's language settings 6. deleted all Registry-settings for (1) Word, (2) Office (HKCU...\Office) --- ultima ratio, before switching to Windows 7 7. used the Office rapair-function 8. disabled OpenType Font formatting features 9. cleaned up my word-templates to ensure identically parapgraph-settings in the linked word-documents 10. avoided to open the style-sheets-panel and to assign templates via this panel 11. changed my default printer (Adobe PDF) to another printer 12. deleted my default printer, set it to Microsoft XPS 13. changed from Vista Ultimate 32-bit to Windows 7 64 Bit to Windows 7 32 Bit

Thanks for your thoughts Pete. I can confirm that this does not happen when saving in docx format, it only happens in 2000-2003 compatibility mode after a save when using PS fonts. The option of embedding fonts is not checked. I have the latest video drivers. It does not happpen in Word 2000 so it appears to be a bug in Word 2010 when in 2000/2003 compatibility mode.
