I am not a Microsoft Employee but a Microsoft Spark Developer.  I don't think you got the answer you were looking for so I will attempt to answer it.  Most Microsoft Products are available for a 90 to 120 evaluation. The software is available at MSDN This gives you a chance to use it for a few months at no cost and if it meets your needs all you have to do is go to the Microsoft Online store, purchase a license or Licenses and reactivate the software.

Also Microsoft has many programs for qualified developers, educators, and students that will give you either free or low cost access to most of their product.  Of course the very best deal to be had is to is the 1 license subscription to MSDN (does not include Enterprise Software), It has an annual cost from about  $173 (with coupon codes you can occasionally  get 35% off that if you can find one on the net).  The profession and enterprise edition can run up to $ 10,000 annually but it gives you unlimited full access to all Microsoft Software, even Legacy apps and Operatining systems. Understand this is not software to be used for production but for evaluation and development, if you put it into production you  will still need to purchase a CAL for it. When you consider that Office 2010 or Office 365 can cost as much as $ 495 for the retail version and Windows 7 Ultimate can cost almost $ 400 you have already paid the cost of one year of the lowest tear of Tech Net. If you are a serious developer it makes no sense to buy MS Products from a retail store.  Subscribers also receive access to MSDN Support forum where you can get professional help from oterdevelopers and Microsoft Tech support.  Here you will also find the latest beta download and announcements of new product releases, sometime for free.

My small 10 employee business just completed total Windows 7 desktop virtualization via Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2. Had it not been the free availability of 100's of Microsoft products and a limited number of activation keys given to my business from Microsoft for free, as a new startup we would have never been able to move to the new world of Virtualization and Cloud Computing without going broke. As it ws we only had to purchase 2 server is 36 GB of memorb in each and a small storage array total cost uder $ 30,000. We're now positioned for the next 10 year and due to Virtualization we will not have to regreen (replace every workstation) on a 3 year basis sense it does not matter how obsolete any computer becomes because they are nothing more than thin client now and do no computing. With the forthcoming Windows 8 with Hyper-V, virtualization will come into your home network environment sooner than you think.
