Using classic Outlook for Windows in business environments

Hi, I'm running the new version of Outlook on Windows 11, and have connected to both my Uni (O365) and Gmail (Microsoft Cloud). O365 works fine, but the Gmail account doesn't sync read status back to gmail. I.e. outlook gets the correct read status from Gmail, and it syncs things like starring/flagging emails back to Gmail. But although I can mark things as read in Outlook, that status never syncs back to Gmail. The same is true on 3 different PCs, so it's not peculiar to one particular computer.
Any ideas?

Today I re-installed my pc Win11 Pro (not because of this), everything is fully up to date, issue remains also in these conditions.
Yeah, I guess I spoke too soon, as this afternoon all of the stuff I had marked as read came back as new. :(
Just an update. As of this morning, it appears that the read status of messages is "sticking" in my new Outlook client. I have made no overt changes (though background updates are always a possibility, as I am a bit obsessive about keeping my systems patched...)
wrt "using a different client entirely", that's why I was using Windows Mail. It "just worked". They really need to dig into that app's Gmail protocol handlers and port them into the new Outlook.
