I have this problem - Outlook 2016 doesn't accept password or app password - and i think it is a growing World wide Microsoft problem :-(

See also here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Outlook/comments/19dx64p/outlook_2013_windows_10_suddenly_not_accepting/Outlook gives me this: (startede yesterday)

I have 2 PC's with HOTMAIL accounts in Outlook 2016 ...

They both have this error.

I do get mails ... but I can´t send mails. Yesterday it did work for 1-2 hours ... but right now the error is there all the time :-(

Please help me.

Thanks in advance

Pierre

Previously I could not log in at all. For the past few days when people started to say it was fixed, I was able to log in.

Since then I have remained logged in, however every few hours I get a password needs changing prompt.

This time I am ignoring it and mail continues to work. Sometimes the connection seems sporadic, and it will download 5 or 6 emails at a time.

It's still better than it was, but it's certainly by no means fixed. I'm afraid to remove the account incase I can't get back in again. This is with BlackBerry Hub+.

Still having issues, though it seems less frequent. I'm using Gmail for android, using eas (exchange account) to a personal outlook.com address (which doesn't support modern auth, so using app password).

I've totally deleted the account from my phone, cleared storage and cache for Gmail. Deleted the phone from outlook online, cleared all app passwords and generated a new one. I'm now trying to re-add it and getting near instant failure.

Throughout the day it was going down for a few minutes at a time, better than previous days but an issue still exists.

All along my desktop Outlook app (using MAPI over HTTPS) has been working fine, never any issue. Obviously that uses modern auth which does not seem to have had the issue.

    Hi all,

The Outlook.com service teams implemented changes in the service last night to help resolve the issue. Please test and check if you are connecting reliably again.

If you are using Outlook 2013 or Outlook 2016, please connect with an App Password. I am going to double check with the Outlook Team if those versions should support modern auth and will share back what I find out. From my current testing I am not seeing that work so it might just be in M365 Outlook.

If you are still not able to connect, please share what the app is and what connection settings you are using such as POP, IMAP, Exchange. Please make sure to test with an app password and not your regular password.

    Gorka,

I am genuinely happy that it works for you but the rest of the world seems to be "stuffed". The Mailbird team have been helpful and offered various solutions to try but no consistent success. Sometimes it appears to work then it stops again.

In Mailbird I have 4 accounts with Outlook / Hotmail / live addresses. The number in error keeps varying between all 4 and 1 then 2 then 1 then 3 etc. Last thingyesteday it was 4 and this morning it is 2.

Surely one of the well paid boffins at Microsoft should know what they have done to cause this widespread and variable problem. If not it hints at lack of testing and control in their internal change process.

Personally not very happy with Microsoft because of their slow acceptance of the problem, the slow response and the lack of any helpful updates on what is wrong and when it will (hopefully) be fixed.

    F

    Hi all,

I apologize for the delay getting back to you. I am working with the service teams investigating the issue. It is being worked as a priority incident.

The service teams asked me to get some email accounts for users that were affected when the issue started. [Edit] Thank you to those that responded and provided your repro account specifics. I have shared that to the service teams working on the incident.

The service team is working on a solution, and we should have an update shortly. I'll post back with an update tomorrow 1/31/24.
