How can I open an attachment without downloading it on new Outlook?

Before I switched to new outlook, I was able to double click on attachments and they would open to their specific apps. Ex. If it was a PDF it would open with Acrobat; If it was a word doc, it would open with word. Now I have to click the download button and it default saves to my downloads folder instead of being put where I want it in the beginning. I also can't drag attachments from an email to the specific folder I want to save it to on my desktop. I have to download and then move it from my downloads folder.

I know it's probably just a new process I'll have to get used to, but hey maybe someone knows a hack!

Thank you in advance :)

It's March 2025 and I tried switching to New Outlook on Desktop windows and I can now click attachments and have them open to their specific apps as well as drag files from an email to whatever folder I want to save it in!

I did try outlook online and you can't do it there yet.

    Hi there,

Still waiting for you to resolve this please.

Seriously Microsoft this is ridiculous and unacceptable, how are you charging people for software yearly that isn’t fit for purpose. When will this be resolved re attachments? It’s a joke

Nearly 10 months later and this is still an issue. Glad I have never switched was just trying to help a coworker that has a new laptop setup trying to just open a VM attachment that comes into their email and they can only download it or save it. Pretty retrogressive and a shame that even after this long string of comments there has been not one comment from Microsoft for over half a year let alone a resolution on the issue.
