Outlook attachments showing in body of email rather than attached to it

I think I am having the same problem of a poorly designed user interface / UX. I see attachments as icons... vs a list of attachments at the top of the email. This is VERY FRUSTRATING B/C THE INFO THAT USED TO BE DISPLAYED FOR ATTACHMENTS IS NOT SHOWING FOR ICONS... in particular, I need to see the FILE ATTACHMENT SIZE... so I can remove attachments when the total email attachments size exceeds the max limits on file attachment sizes that the servers will accept. Also, when I attach docs, it often sticks them where the cursor is located... often in the middle of the text... so it rips the sentence or paragraph apart by sticking giant icon in the middle of the paragraph and chopping up the text... looks like garbage and is hard to read... so I have to DELETE the attachment.. scroll the cursor down to somewhere else and then re-insert the file...

This UX creates frustration, rework, and waste of time.... this busts UX design rules e.g. The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman, The Thoughtless Design of Everyday Things by Karl Weigars... removed link

Needs to be fixed.

Would like to know where I can turn this off, change it....

For the past few weeks, I've encountered the same issue where Outlook defaults to attaching documents as links instead of traditional email attachments. While I’m familiar with the HTML workaround, this is not the issue here. This is a new default setting of Outlook that cannot be changed.

I strongly recommend reverting to the previous functionality that allowed both options—attaching files as either links or direct attachments. Each serves a distinct purpose:

• Attachments: I use them to grab the reader's attention, as recipients are more likely to open an attachment than click on a link. Attachments are also easily recognizable in Outlook, indicated by a small icon, which helps in identifying emails that require reading or review. Moreover, being able to filter emails with attachments is crucial for quickly finding specific messages in my inbox.
• Links: These are useful for referencing documents without requiring immediate attention. They allow recipients to access resources as needed rather than prompting an immediate review.

I understand that a limitation of attachments is that they don’t remain in the email thread after the initial message. However, a potential solution could be automatically converting attachments into links in replies, ensuring the entire email thread retains access to the original information shared.

Until more user research is conducted to address this issue, I urge you to restore the previous version. Links are often overlooked, as many people associate them with external websites rather than important documents, causing materials to go unread.

Can you please provide the Outlook version and whether are you on Windows, Mac, or the web?

There are a few possible reasons why your attachments are showing in the body of the email instead of as separate files. One is that you are using a Rich Text format, which allows you to insert pictures and other objects into the message body. Another is that you are using an older version of Outlook that does not support modern attachment features. A third is that you have a setting that prevents you from previewing attachments in a separate pane.

To fix this problem, you can try the following steps in classic Outlook for Windows:

Update your Outlook application to the latest version. To do this, go to File > Account > Update Options and click Update Now.

Turn on the attachment preview. To do this, go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Attachment Handling and check the Turn on Attachment Preview box.

I was having the same issue this morning. We ran a repair of Outlook which did not resolve the issue. Eventually, because I needed to get the email out, I logged in on Outlook for the web and was able to add my attachment as expected.

We then tested if the behavior occurred with a new email and it did not present the same behavior. There was something in particular about the email I was replying to that was embedding attachments. It's bizarre and really annoying... my IT support tech had not seen the behavior before either and did not have any ideas as to what the cause could be. At least using the Outlook web app resolved it, but I hope it's not a common occurrence to need to use that workaround.

First-day occurrence of the same problem, without any updates or upgrades or changes of settings of anything on my PC within the past two days. Both in replies to messages or in newly created messages. Contrary to the official MS advice, I turned the format to HTML (from Rich Text) - and the file attached as usual (instead of that F-word) icon in the body of the message. Hope this may help some of my fellow sufferers. BTW the latest MS update of BIOS, some three days ago, changed a number of settings in Word, had to reset them - although they stayed ticked off as before! Had to untick, and tick them off again, and press OK. Outlook worked OK though after that BIOS upgrade, this occurred without any previous warnings today.
