New outlook for Windows not syncing read/unread status of emails

Hello,

In the new Outlook for Windows, the experience is generally good except for an issue where emails read in it still appear as unread when viewed in a different client, like the Outlook desktop app or the iPhone mail app. Any ideas why? Has anyone else experienced this?

To reproduce:

  1. Open your Outlook for Windows and another client (e.g . Gmail)
  2. Find a read email in the alternate client and mark it as unread
  3. New outlook for Windows will update after ~10 seconds displaying the unread status - this is GOOD
  4. Now try doing this the opposite way around - both marking an email as read or unread within the new Outlook for Windows doesn't sync to the actual mail server. It does maintain this unread state within the Outlook for Windows even after closing however.

It's annoying because if I go through my emails on my computer, then look at them later on my phone, it still shows all emails as unread.

Edit 28th Feb 2024: I have unmarked this as resolved because there are clearly many people with later versions who still experience this issue. Please sort this out Microsoft - it's incredibly annoying.

    Thanks for the idea, but my issue is not that I can't mark a message as read in Outlook, the problem is that 'read' status does not sync back to the original email server, it is only marked 'read' in Outlook. So when I check my mail on my phone, nothing I've read on my computer is marked.

    This is a bare bones, fundamental feature of an email client app, and it doesn't work in the new Outlook.

    With all due respect, this is really not a practical solution. The real solution is for Microsoft to acknowledge this critical problem and correct it asap.

    Hi,

    Using version  20240308003.14 . as my primary email client. When an email is read on this app, the emails still show up as unready on my iPhone & iPad. This wasn't a problem using the "Old Outlook" client for Windows.

    Same here. But in opposite direction. When i read email in my browser or on other device. Read / unread status does not change in outlook. The same when i delete message in browser. It still show as unread. Which is frustrating and not how IMAP should work.

    On the other hand i think that status from outlook to server is sent correctly. So when i read something in outlook i will see it as read in browser as well.
