New outlook for Windows not syncing read/unread status of emails

Hello,

In the new Outlook for Windows, the experience is generally good except for an issue where emails read in it still appear as unread when viewed in a different client, like the Outlook desktop app or the iPhone mail app. Any ideas why? Has anyone else experienced this?

To reproduce:

  1. Open your Outlook for Windows and another client (e.g . Gmail)
  2. Find a read email in the alternate client and mark it as unread
  3. New outlook for Windows will update after ~10 seconds displaying the unread status - this is GOOD
  4. Now try doing this the opposite way around - both marking an email as read or unread within the new Outlook for Windows doesn't sync to the actual mail server. It does maintain this unread state within the Outlook for Windows even after closing however.

It's annoying because if I go through my emails on my computer, then look at them later on my phone, it still shows all emails as unread.

Edit 28th Feb 2024: I have unmarked this as resolved because there are clearly many people with later versions who still experience this issue. Please sort this out Microsoft - it's incredibly annoying.

    My question to Microsoft is why this matter has not been addressed before all the other things that have been addressed. This matter affects more customers in a real way than anything else whether Microsoft likes it or not. Are they being children or moving on with reality and profitably? GROW UP MICROSOFT AND GOOGLE!!!! The vast majority of both your customers are on Windows and using Gmail. GET A GRIP!!!!

    Just for the record, there are MANY features in New Outlook that don't work. Not that just don't work "right:, but just flat don't work! Microsoft is a lousy company for releasing this cursed New Outlook without having it debugged anywhere close to fully. This is just another example of how annoying they can be

    I have this problem ever since I was forced to use outlook. I have windows 11 outlook and gmail. I have no clever features. No server. No links to my phone. Just a simple standalone pc. I reprted the problem in December when I first tried the new outlook. Nothing has improved. I can't see anyone at microsoft acknowledging that this is a widespread bug

    I can only add that after trying the Outlook (NEW) several times also when it was in a pre-release state (and switching back to the "MAIL" app as each attempt was a disappointment) that this particular issue of read status is inconsistent as I experienced the anomaly not being completely specific. Just yesterday I experienced it exactly as you described but at the same time, it also reset the read status and some msgs previously read became "unread". New msgs that have been read using the app, were not updated is so seems on the server and so even though a msg would show as read, using my phone app, that same mgs did not change state to read. etc etc etc etc.

    Coming with a background in "testing" I would not ever consider releasing such a piece of software in its current state. I would term it "UNSTABLE"

    As I'm writing this, I just noticed that 3 more msgs that have been read yesterday are now showing up as unread. Ridiculous to say the least.

    I suppose I will switch back, once again, to the MAIL app until Microsoft finally figures out things.

    The most annoying part is that randomly after starting Windows, I am suddenly forced to use this NEW Outlook.

    Just looked at my second email account and ALL msgs are now showing as UNREAD.

    Switching back to MAIL...

    Same here with version 20240209002.12. I reported this problem many months ago. it is unreal that it is not corrected yet.

    The Outlook Team did some work in late December to address this issue. I am not sure the fix build though. I just tested this with my version at work with my Gmail account and I was able to see it working properly. I did read/unread in New Outlook and it showed up on Gmail web ~10-20 seconds later.

    In New Outlook if I go to Help, Diagnostics, my version shows as: Client Version: 20240112004.07.

    If you are at this version or higher and still repro it would probably be worth submitting an In App ticket (Help, Support).
