Spam filter in hotmail not working.

As I said months ago when I posted the question, I decided to switch to gmail, after 25-30 years with hotmail. They did nothing to stop the junk mail flooding my inbox. The last straw was when they wanted to charge me for storage. It was very inconvenient having to change emails and notify relatives, friends, businesses, etc. Still have to check hotmail from time to time. The only way hotmail/outlook will ever do anything is if people stop using it. In any case, I would never come back.

I finally got tired of this lack of spam filtering and using the "RULES" option under settings for MAIL, have built my own spam filtering for my aunt's account. Using a web browser on a Windows 10 laptop.

Over the course of two weeks, I looked at what emails I sent to the JUNK folder for her, and then built rules for filtering around the spam email characteristics:

• Misspelled Subject Words - created a rule and added common misspellings I saw in emails: "coverge", "auto_insurance", etc. Rule checks subject line and body for them.
• Self referral by email ID - created a rule to send any email that uses her email user ID in the subject line to the JUNK folder (most legit emails don't do this). Rule checks the subject line only.
• The rest of the rules focus on common topics of the scam emails themselves - "thephotostick", "norton"/"n0rt0n" (this could go in misspellings rule), "AARP offer", "harbor-freight", "icloud", etc.

These rules would focus on what's unique to what emails you're seeing. This has knocked down the amount of spam that sits in the INBOX by about 90%, which has been helpful. This method does require some updating from time to time, but on the plus side I have not had any false-positives as of yet.

1. I am using hotmail account since 20 years ago. The spam problem starts only in the last months.

I think could be a politics of microsoft for saturating your account and so ask you to pay above 5 gb of space.

2. I was using Outlook for mobile in the last 8 years. It stops working fine for business account exchange (not 365) since april 2023. I lose a lot of time in support and trying everything to keep it working. No way.

For second issue i solved going to gmail app and all now is working. For first problem i think i will do the same.

Hi Tom. I have had my Hotmail address for at least 25 years, I think, but as I said, I couldn’t stand it anymore. Despite the hassle involved, I have gone to gmail. For the time being I have to keep checking my hotmail every so often, in case there are a few places I forgot to notify of the change, but I will eventually stop that. As you say, Microsoft doesn’t care.

My wife and myself are feed up to the back teeth with spam (not the food stuff). I find it weird that Hotmail/outlook keep saying we are at 93% full which is complete tosh. The spam address is the same but it hardly ever gets blocked.
