For everyone wondering which versions of Outlook require and don't require App Passwords, here's a list of what's needed for which versions:

For Gmail POP, it will be necessary to create an App Password and use that password in place of your regular password when adding the account to all versions of Outlook. The reason for this is that Microsoft only updated the IMAP protocol to support OAuth, Gmail's requirement for an email app to be listed as "Secure"

For Outlook 2016 and earlier it will be necessary to create an App Password for both POP & IMAP accounts.

Outlook 2019 and later support OAuth for Gmail IMAP. With OAuth you only need the regular password. If, however, you have a Gmail POP account, an App Password WILL still be required. It's still a good idea to turn on 2-Step Verification to secure your account but it's not necessary for Outlook 2019+.

I saved the password it generated (just in case) even though it says it's only needed one time.

One thing to remember is the spaces in the generated password are there to make it easier for people to parse (read). Don't use them when you enter the password in the window for it. Only 16 characters are what is required - none of them are spaces!

Is this how it works? I select my phone. Google sends me a 16 word password to my phone as a text. I then go into Outlook on my desktop and enter that as a password. Done forever (or does this repeat each day)?

    Sorry, I'm a non techie. Here's where I'm stuck.

"At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using > Select device and choose the device you’re using > Generate."

The only app that is listed there is for my phone, not for my desktop Outlook. Do I select the phone?
