Outlook has stopped connecting with Gmail

Hi All,

I use Outlook for Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 PC. I use it for email on Microsoft Exchange and on Gmail, and it worked very well until yesterday. Today, Microsoft Exchange email still works fine, but I cannot send or receive email from Gmail, and Outlook asks me over and over again to enter my username and password for smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com. I have switched Outlook (and my computer) off and on again; switched off "all connected experiences" in Outlook and switched them back on again; changed to 2-factor authentication on Google and changed back again; and still it does not work. It is, needless to say, driving me mad.

So far as I know I have not changed any settings at all between yesterday and today.

I would very much appreciate some help in diagnosing and fixing this problem. Thanks!

I found a solution that works!

You have to enable 2-Step-Verification in Gmail first - then do this....

Create & use App Passwords

Go to your Google Account.

  1. Select Security.
  2. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
    1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
    2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
    3. Your account is through work, school, or other organization.
    4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
  3. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using and then Select device and choose the device you’re using and then Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Once you go through that you can use the Generated Password for your POP account

Hope this helps you all

    Did not work for me.

I am using Outlook 2021, followed all the steps and it still did not work. This is extremely frustrating and I do not know what else to do as I need to use Outlook as my mail server.

I have also checked all the settings in Office Account and that all seems to be correct, unless I have missed a change there

Any other solutions as Google is not responding to any of my calls for help

Does Microsoft ever act to defend their software marketshare? Google has intentionally blocked all MS outlook programs and apps as 'lacking' sufficient security, so we are forced to look for an alternative to MS mail programs - and find something acceptable to google. You can cancel any move to MS 365

So I see you found this here:

    https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

Well it certainly sounded good, but it didnt work for me and I did everything right, I enabled the 2 factor authentication. I tried adding the account from scratch from Outlook File ... Info ... + Add Account.  At the Outlook dialog box, entered my email address and Advanced Options "Let me setup my account manually". Click Connect, choose POP option from the list of choices, the "POP Account Settings" dialog then asks for the password, fill it in and click "Connect". Immediately the small "Internet Email - <my email address>" dialog box popped up asking me for my Password (which it had already pre-entered for me since I entered it just a second ago, and I just click OK (or also try pasting it in just to be sure). Then the Outlook dialog "Something went wrong" "We couldnt connect to the incoming (POP) server. The connection timed out."  is displayed and it allows me to change any of the settings via "Change Account Settings" to display "POP Account Settings" dialog but its the same old **** I have dealt with for a whole day now. pop.gmail.com / 995, smtp.gmail.com / 465, "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL/TLS)", bla bla bla. I have it all right and it just wont work.

I generated a second 16-digit app password and continued to get the same problem with that. I even tried a third time thinking maybe I needed to log out of my google account first and log back and and then generate the password and that didnt work, you get the idea, I am grasping at straws, something is fundamentally flawed here as to why this is not working for me, and I cannot figure for the life of me what that is.

While I feel like I have learned something new "in theory" which I never knew about, I cannot seem to apply it and I have no idea why not, well at least partially .... Now just to at least test this App pw feature, I generated a pw for my iphone and added the account successfully with that password (there is a feature it appears on iphone that allows adding the account to the phone without entering ANY pw, not sure how that works, but if you specify Google from the list of the 6 major providers then it works that way, so anyway in order to test this app pw feature, I chose "Other" email account type, and was forced to enter the server URLs and pw and it worked (if I modified the pw it didnt work, so I know for sure that this app pw feature CAN work and that the actual pw is critical).

So something is broke for my "Outlook Office Professional Plus 2016" and I have no idea what it is.

    thanks

    dd

not fixing the problem. Goodle is now requiring extra security for anything outlook before it will forward any gmail. All outlook programs and apps are considered unsecure! MS needs to give us a fix!

Read the Answer post on the first page of this thread. That procedure has solved the problem for many, many people.
