Outlook has stopped connecting with Gmail

Hi All,

I use Outlook for Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 PC. I use it for email on Microsoft Exchange and on Gmail, and it worked very well until yesterday. Today, Microsoft Exchange email still works fine, but I cannot send or receive email from Gmail, and Outlook asks me over and over again to enter my username and password for smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com. I have switched Outlook (and my computer) off and on again; switched off "all connected experiences" in Outlook and switched them back on again; changed to 2-factor authentication on Google and changed back again; and still it does not work. It is, needless to say, driving me mad.

So far as I know I have not changed any settings at all between yesterday and today.

I would very much appreciate some help in diagnosing and fixing this problem. Thanks!

I found a solution that works!

You have to enable 2-Step-Verification in Gmail first - then do this....

Create & use App Passwords

Go to your Google Account.

  1. Select Security.
  2. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
    1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
    2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
    3. Your account is through work, school, or other organization.
    4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
  3. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using and then Select device and choose the device you’re using and then Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Once you go through that you can use the Generated Password for your POP account

Hope this helps you all

I work from client's desktop computers in multiple locations - which is why I use gmail.

My gmail was 'talking' to Outlook 2013 until I turned off 2FA as I do not always have a phone with me and do not have an issue with privacy concerns.

Then my gmail STOPPED talking to Outlook 2013.

I do not have any other 'device' other than my desktop computer.

I do not have an android or Iphone.

I went through the above process and when I put in the "app password" I was completely locked out of my gmail.

I have reinstated the annoying 2FA but still have no connectivity between Gmail & Outlook 2013.

    Error messages received are:

    (0x80004005); operation failed

(0x800CCC0E): Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for ******@gmail.com. Error: cannot connect to the server

(0x800CCC92): your email server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password for this account Settings. The server responded: -ERR [AUTH] Application -specific password required: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833

I have lost over five hours trying to get this working again. The google support link has not helped.

    Hi S Mason,

I have been trying to solve this issue but am at wits end. I have 4 desktops, all having similar problem.

Yes, there should be international regulation for "right to use own choice apps" to access emails.

    Have a good day.

Yes - likewise. I’ve just accepted that one party here does not want users to be able to connect Outlook to Gmail any more so I’ve deleted GMail from my laptop. I get an error saying that my browser (Chrome) is the issue. What my browser has to do with my Mail app I have no idea

It feels so childish that the big tech companies do this stuff to each other and therefore actually to their own users. Strong regulation cannot come soon enough
