Outlook has stopped connecting with Gmail

Hi All,

I use Outlook for Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 PC. I use it for email on Microsoft Exchange and on Gmail, and it worked very well until yesterday. Today, Microsoft Exchange email still works fine, but I cannot send or receive email from Gmail, and Outlook asks me over and over again to enter my username and password for smtp.gmail.com and pop.gmail.com. I have switched Outlook (and my computer) off and on again; switched off "all connected experiences" in Outlook and switched them back on again; changed to 2-factor authentication on Google and changed back again; and still it does not work. It is, needless to say, driving me mad.

So far as I know I have not changed any settings at all between yesterday and today.

I would very much appreciate some help in diagnosing and fixing this problem. Thanks!

I found a solution that works!

You have to enable 2-Step-Verification in Gmail first - then do this....

Create & use App Passwords

Go to your Google Account.

  1. Select Security.
  2. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in. If you don’t have this option, it might be because:
    1. 2-Step Verification is not set up for your account.
    2. 2-Step Verification is only set up for security keys.
    3. Your account is through work, school, or other organization.
    4. You turned on Advanced Protection.
  3. At the bottom, choose Select app and choose the app you using and then Select device and choose the device you’re using and then Generate.
  4. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
  5. Tap Done.

Tip: Most of the time, you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Once you go through that you can use the Generated Password for your POP account

Hope this helps you all

Follow up .... I went back through the MFA on my 2 gmail accounts (as directed in this thread and as I had done previously) setting up the outlook connection manually. What I also tracked, though, and sharing it here for those where the suggested steps didn't work ... is look at the folder that Outlook is using to access the .pst data ... be sure that the folder where the data is being downloaded to and the folder in Outlook (your choice, so it could be a variety) match. When all the above steps were done, and after receiving waaaaay too many emails from gmail (my next project is to do some cleanup there) my system seems to once again be working as desired with the POP mail.

This is a rhetorical question ... but why did this occur a year ago, before MFA was an issue, and again after I had already set up the MFA in Outlook a few weeks ago. Too many people are struggling with this and it isn't a new issue. I wonder if something is corrupting a file somewhere that triggers all this.

Using Outlook 365 for Mac and this will not work. There is no way to add a password WITHIN Outlook for Mac, as it transports me to Google, which then will not authenticate. Maddening. Help!

Since you're using 365 for Mac, see if this applies:

Thank you so much, this one worked!! I already had 2-factor enabled and it was the 'app password' that worked. I didn't have to enter it, just created it and after that it signed me right in...
