Error code 80090016 Trusted Platform Module has malfunctioned.

When I try to add a new Office 365 email to my outlook I get the error below.   I think it's because of my "Work or school account" which I want to remove. I'm not sure how my email was signed up for this second account. I set up this computer for home use only, I won't be using any of the Microsoft Azure features. 

My question is, what will happen when I remove my “work account” and leave my Microsoft account?  Everything is backed up on Onedrive, I just don’t know what to expect because when I went to remove it, it warned me about losing data and settings.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

    ~Issue fixed in one specific use case~

    I had this same issue with a machine I had reimaged and then used my organization's User State Migration tool to restore a backup from another computer. This tool basically copies everything from the user profile on one computer into the next, including AppData, etc.

    After some troubleshooting, I found the user state backup was the issue, specifically in the Appdata folder. 2 workarounds worked:

    1. Logging into the account before running the backup tool
    2. Backing up files from the previous machine manually, being careful to not copy over the AppData folder.

    I know this is pretty case-specific and doesn't get to the file location of the root issue, but I hope it helps for some people.

    We see problems like this a lot usually removing all the work/school accounts and signing in to any app (word, outlook, etc) resolves any error message. Also when signing in unchecking let my school/work manage my machine can prevent issues in the future.

    Thanks, this solution worked for me, Ive deleted the 2 folders, same error on the first time connection, and after all is working.

    I managed fix the issue by going into the program folder and running the scanpst.exe. Soon as I closed Outlook and ran the exe the error is no longer being generated when signing into Outlook.

    Hi everyone,

    I had to disconnect my work account and then clear the TPM via tpm.msc and also via BIOS.

    After that I did a online repair Office and re-added my work account.

    It's working for me now.
