Error code 80090016 Trusted Platform Module has malfunctioned.

When I try to add a new Office 365 email to my outlook I get the error below.   I think it's because of my "Work or school account" which I want to remove. I'm not sure how my email was signed up for this second account. I set up this computer for home use only, I won't be using any of the Microsoft Azure features.

My question is, what will happen when I remove my “work account” and leave my Microsoft account?  Everything is backed up on Onedrive, I just don’t know what to expect because when I went to remove it, it warned me about losing data and settings.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

We are having this same issue. This is what fixed it for us. Create the following registry entries.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity "DisableADALatopWAMOverride"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity "DisableAADWAM"=dword:00000001

This did the trick for me!!!

If it helps anyone else, this did not initially work, but clearing the identities for the accounts (Each ID in its own folder in regedit. Delete the entire folder.) that I was unable to log into, then restarting the computer, then trying to log in again worked. I had to still delete the bad account from microsoft mail, but afterwards outlook and microsoft mail were both fixed.

    Here's the solution.

    1. Log in under another admin credentials or you may go to \PC-name\c$
    2. Rename the following folder:

    C:\users$dir\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy

    To:

    C:\users$dir\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy.old

I managed to fix the problem via signing in with the same work organization's credentials in the Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. BTW I have no idea what caused the issue

This is what worked for me. I had a client that had this problem on 3 PCs and this simple solution fixed all of them. I had tried the other solutions of deleting the contents of the Ngc folder or renaming the other AAD folder and they didn't work. But signing out and back in worked beautifully.

Thank god something so simple actually worked for once, just signed out of the account and re-signed in and it stopped showing the error.

    Dear 3D Scanner

I have been experiencing this issue since MS updates at or around the 13th/14th of August.  VERY ANNOYING!  My Office 365, Outlook Google Syncs (email and google drive) as well as WebeEx.  All prompting me for u-name and p-word with every reboot.  i have been scouring the web looking for real solutions.  I came across this page.

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/f4742bab-4e27-4963-a151-2349a234132b/outlook-365-2016-trusted-platform-module-error-code-80090016?forum=outlook

look at Binod Shrestha response.  I think this is the easier path, as other posts were suggesting to blast away your PC profile and start over.  That seems to work, according to posts, but quite frankly if the TPM driver is corrupt, uninstalling it is a good solution, I think.

    Thoughts and comments welcomed!

    Best Regards,

    Lou
