how do i get rid of the panel on the right hand side of my screen that takes up space and i cant read my emails properly

The ads are how Microsoft makes the money to keep Outlook.com free.

You can upgrade to Outlook Plus (paid) to be rid of them permanently. 

If you have PLUS and ads please contact the Billing Department.

Hi everyone,

We understand how you feel about the recent changes happened on your email accounts. The system upgraded the user interface of all Hotmail users to Outlook.com. The launch of Outlook.com preview gave everyone an opportunity to learn together as we roll out and scale this new service.

Microsoft email account users received notification messages about the upcoming upgrade. There's no option to switch back to Hotmail.

You can read the following articles for more information about Outlook.com:

There are a lot of reasons why Outlook.com interface is not working properly on your computer. There is a possibility that your internet browser is not compatible with the new interface or it needs to be optimized. To make sure that your internet browser is Outlook.com ready, please do the following recommendations:

  1. Upgrade or download the latest version of your internet browser to make sure its compatibility with the new interface. Refer to this link to know more about it.
  2. If you are using Internet Explorer, reset its settings and check if the issue gets fixed. To Reset Internet Explorer settings, follow these steps:

a. Exit all programs, including Internet Explorer (if it is running).

Click Start, type the following command in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER: inetcpl.cpl and the Internet Options dialog box appears

b. Click the Advanced tab.

c. Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset. Then click Reset again.

d. When Internet Explorer finishes resetting the settings, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.

e. Start Internet Explorer again.

Hi,

We understand that you want to remove the space of on the right side of your mailbox. In addition to JMH3143's reply, the space on the right side of your mailbox is for the contents or information from third-party network (like Facebook and Twitter). To disable this option, please follow the steps below:

  1. Go to your inbox.
  2. On the upper-right part of your screen, click the gear icon, and then select More mail settings.
  3. Under Reading email, click Content from third-party networks.
  4. Under Showing public content, select **Don't show public content from third-party networks.**5. Click Save.

    Dear 'moderators' (MS employeess). 

    People are just going to switch to Gmail if you don't fix the problem.

    So read carefully and do some real work to provide a fix.

    Stop escaping from the questions: someone asked about this vertical panel on the right and you answered with issues at server and IExplorer level (ehm, we're all switched to Chrome or Firefox anyway in case you haven't realised...).  

    As mentioned by someone elase on this forum (which you ignored) this vertical panel does not contain external ads (not yet??) but it's kind of a MS column with tips. mine at the top says: "Outlook feels instant with the latest internet explorer" and a little button "try it now"

    It's very nice to offer tips but the world is full of people who still have square screens !!

    so we can read the tips but we can't read the title of our emails.

    every computer at my office has square screens (I have 4 of them attached to be precise because I use Bloomberg but i get one monitor in each screen) and out of 4 computers at home only one has a 16/9 screen and that's because it's connected to the flatscreen TV.

    Sorry, no plan to upgrade (screen/graphics cards, etc. you are dreaming!!)

    On a square screen we can no longer read our email titles.  It's as simple as that.

    Now there are a few simple fixes:  

    allow people to make that right panel smaller (like moving the panes bars in excel). 

    allow people to scroll the central panel wih scroll bars (like in word or powerpoint)

    allow people to choose to put this panel at the bottom of the screen (it's easy to scroll down with the mouse wheel - it's more of a pain to scroll sideways

    all of the above would still allow you to forcefeed this ads panel onto users. 

    DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHY WE ARE UPSET? WE DON'T MIND THE ADS BUT WE MIIND THE FORCEFUL REMOVAL OF CHOICE AND DICTATORIAL IMPOSITION OF YOUR WILL

    OF course the best would be to allow users to turn this panel off altogether... perhaps I am dreaming.

    What I don't understand is how is it possible that the mighty company did not think of these simple solutions...?

    now, just in case you didn't get it:

    PS I agree with many others, the new look is questionable.  what is not questionable is why did you have to make it more complicated and slower?
