Came across this exact problem a few minutes ago... So freaking disturbing! Randomly, i figured it out, so i hope this is going to be helpful. (Btw, i m not a computers expert or anything so i m clueless about the "valid", proper terms). When you have been through the whole process of verifying (over and over) your passwords, and your Microsoft - Account page appears, you click on the Home tab, then on the image (the personal one that you have selected, found next to the "Hi, (username)" ). On the top left of your screen there's a blue space with the word Profile. On its left there's a tab formed by many small pieces. You click on that. After that, you click on Outlook.com, which is the first choice of the ones that emerge. And, eventually, you do have access to your email.
So, what's stopping you?

Hi. I have had exactly the same problem several times when trying to update personal information.
Microsoft... would it not be as Easy as putting a 'Option' on the Account Home page called 'INBOX'??? Which strangely took you back to your Mail Inbox?
