I created a new Outlook.com email address instead of renaming existing. How can I free up the new account?

Hi,

Before realising I could transfer/upgrade/rename my existing Live account to an outlook.com address, I created a new one in error. After realising my mistake, I deleted/closed the newly created outlook.com address then attempted to rename my current Live account to the now closed outlook.com account. Unfortunately I am not able to as I'm told I will need to wait 270 days before the account I created will be available for use.

Clearly I can prove I created the outlook.com account as I have all the security details. Is there any way of freeing up the account immediately?

Additionally, I am not the only person who has made this mistake, several of us jumped in feet-first. Below are a selection of links to people asking the same question. None of us have had a useful reply yet. Please can somebody provide us with a solution (other than mark your diary for 270 days from now)?

Hi Everyone,

Merging accounts is currently not available for Microsoft accounts. This issue has been reported to our Senior Support Team and they are currently looking into this. Well be sending updates once all the details are complete.

I will be locking this thread now. For workarounds please refer to my post last August 6, 2012.

    Hello Ryniel,

    Can MS come up with a solution like.

    Sign In with your old id's (Hotmail / Live) & in the settings give a option to merge it with the new Outlook Id just by Signing In with the newly created Outlook Id. In this way all those who have created 02 different Id's can be merged as one also we do not have to wait for 270days.

    A merge option would be perfect, but I can see why that might be difficult to implement from a technical perspective. I would be satisfied with freeing up the closed account a lot sooner than 270 days. Anything less than 30 days (preferably less than 7) would be in a range that I could work with. This depends however on knowing the exact date and time when the 30 days were up, so that I would be ready to reclaim the address (either by renaming another account, or by adding the address as an alias to another account) as soon as it's available again.

    In my opinion it's unacceptable to tell customers they have to wait for 270 days to resolve a problem like this. A little bit of flexibility from Microsoft shouldn't be too much to ask.

    That's not really helpful considering the problem in THIS thread is:

    People made NEW outlook.com accounts because Microsoft was not clear on the process and NOW either want to merge those accounts with their old live.com accounts OR delete the new outlook.com account and not wait 270 days so they can bring it in as an alias...

    Some of these answers from what appears to be Microsoft employees are disgraceful, whatever happened to good customer service. If any of my clients had a problem I wouldnt dream of just quoting a blog post to them, telling them its their fault or tell them they had to wait almost 10 months to resolve a problem.

    Most of the framework must already be in place to merge accounts, it wouldnt take a lot to alter this to also facilitate merging to accounts that have already been created.

    Come on Microsoft sort yourselves out
