Hello -

When I attempt to add my outlook.com email account to any iOS device I recieve the error "Unable to verify account information".

I see this problem on my iPhone 4s and iPad and all devices are running iOS5.01 with no additional updates available.

I followed these steps to setup my account

-settings, add new mail account

-selected Hotmail

-entered my outlook.com address (full SMTP address - eg ******@outlook.com) and my password

-after several seconds I recieve the error "Unable to verify account information"

Power cycling the devices doesn't help.  Everything works fine from the web.

Any ideas?

sign in to what account on the web browser?

Just upgraded to iOS8.0.1 and had exactly the problem described. I went into Outlook through a browser, disabled my phone and turned off 2 step security and boom... It worked just like you said. MICROSOFT - you need to fix the bug!!!

I had the same problem.  And this morning when I was able to get to a desk top did EXACTLY what you said and disabled phone, etc and BAM!!!! works fine!  Thank you! I was going crazy for HOURS trying to fix the problem and it is my business email which got disabled to begin with.

I wouldn't recommend turning off two-step verification. There's a reason the email providers are pushing that method.

You can get an "app password" from Microsoft that you enter in your iPad email setup instead of your normal password for outlook.com. This procedure is just as easy as turning off two-step, but doesn't compromise your security.

    Go here:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/app-passwords-two-step-verification

The steps for generating a new app password are always the same:

    1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
    2. Under Password and security info, tap or click Edit security info. If you're prompted for a security code here, enter it and tap or click Submit.
    3. Under App passwords, tap or click Create a new app password. A new app password is generated and appears on your screen.

The way you enter an app password can be slightly different, however, depending on the app or device you're trying to sign in to. Several of the most common ones are listed here. Tap or click the ones that apply to you.

I sync my Outlook.com email on an iPhone

    1. On your phone, tap Settings, and then tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    2. Tap your Microsoft account.
    3. Visit your security info page online to get an app password.
    4. Replace the password on your phone with the app password.
    5. Tap Done.

August 1, 2015.  I had the same issue.  Indeed, it's a quirk using hotmail addresses in iOS.  As soon as I deactivated my 2-step authentication feature on Outlook (using the web-interface), this error vanished.  Until I did this, I was running unique apps for G-mail, Yahoo Mail, and outlook.  I've streamlined it so that there's only 1 application controlling all of these accounts. Note: Google-Mail's 2-step authentication seems to mesh nicely with iOS.
