OneDrive causes extended fileproviderd CPU activity, hurts battery life

Wasn't sure where to post this since there's no OneDrive topic.

I’m using OneDrive insider preview 21.225.1031.0005 on macOS 12.0.1, M1 MacBook Pro. Even when I am not interacting with any files in the OneDrive folder, OneDrive regularly has several seconds of 200+% CPU usage. Immediately after, fileproviderd has long periods of 90% CPU use. This is lousy for battery life. I found at least one mention on Twitter of the same thing. The OneDrive CPU activity is likely not new, but I presume fileproviderd is new with the new OS.

I have 15,000 files synced with 12,000 set to “always keep on this device”. (My account has one very large folder that is excluded from syncing.) I watched a couple times and saw that OneDrive app activity triggered about 2 minutes of fileproviderd activity. Since the OneDrive app often has activity even when I’m not doing anything, this means fileproviderd runs *a lot*.

When this happens, Console shows hundreds of lines like these (in big groups of similar lines; these samples did not come next to each other):

They all seem to refer to nonsense file name strings like a{59}m.jpg and b{82}m.jpg. Those names do not exist in my OneDrive.

I would most like to know if this is a Microsoft problem or whether I should open an Apple bug report.

    I noticed that relaunching Finder helps a lot with fileproviderd CPU consumption in my case:

    1. Command + Option + Esc
    2. Select finder
    3. click "Relaunch" button

    Let's see how long it lasts.

    It does not however helps with the memory consumption, that I can already say. It seems it keeps growing actually, which will soon become a problem for me, I'll monitor it.

    Using Microsoft Products from the 1992 and it has always been a complete mess - for so many years never had a positive experience with them!

    Unfortunately fighting with their OneDrive now on Mac too... Since 2019 only problems - consumption of resources by MS ***** software is constant, but I don't think they care...

    Has anyone found a fix for this? I thought I was going crazy at the start of the week when I realised how slow my laptop suddenly is and found out about this fileproviderd thing from another online thread. Its taking up so much energy, my laptop fans are constantly whirring and I don't know if this is something I have caused and my laptop is just going to be unusable with Onedrive, or if it is just to do with the update. Any help would be appreciated as I store all of my work on Onedrive

    I have the same issue.

    It even crashes my Finder regularly when I try to copy/move bigger files from OneDrive to the Desktop in order to be able to at least work on them.

    This is still a very annoying issue and its hard to see that Microsoft doesn't come up with an OneDrive Update, which solves it.

    My temporary solution is to start OneDrive once and a while, let it sync, and then close it again.

    I recognized, that after closing OneDrive the fileproviderd process still consumes CPU for a certain amount of time (15 minutes) but eventually it disappears from the top cpu consumers again.
