Has anyone seen this before. Any advise on how to move back to default position?

Yes, it happened to me too.  The easy fix is to turn off the "Coming Soon" button on the top right.  I hope that MS does NOT make this a permanent feature, it is a silly place for the search bar.

The license you have is from your work? I'm asking because if it is, there is a slight chance that the administrator (or someone who has access to the O365 admin portal) set that the insider/beta builds to be available. If that is done, whoever tries to install o365 within that organization gets the insider/beta builds instead of the normal o365 build.

In order to get rid of it someone should access the o365 admin portal, deactivate the usage of insider builds then you should unistall your office copy and re-download and install it. Then you will have fresh official build

If it's not that, dunno what else could be

Well that sucks, as I'm not on Insider build. Just a fresh laptop install with the  most current Office365 version and boom - search usability just got hit by -10000% :(

No it is not there...if you're using an O365 Insider build. I'm trying to find that switch too but no chance. Only thing I could do was to opt out from the insider builds and I was told that the "official regular build" will be installed with the next update (usually in a month).

Now I wait for that month to pass...
