Trying the New teams, instead of my taskbar showing me a checkmark or away status. the taskbar teams just says "New"

For me changing the taskbar icons back to large resolved the issue. When using small taskbar icons it shows "New", when using large taskbar icons, it shows the status.
For me I changed back to Classic and then back to New Teams and now it shows my current status.
Update: Status is gone again. Ugh. I'm going back to Classic until this is fixed.
Same thing for me, got the message saying i would see my status on the task bar but not working at all. Very annoying

I'm using version 23306.3308.2524.1744 (Client version 49/23101227708)
I tried everything that's suggested in this thread but to no avail. Because of this post I did notice I have a different version of New Teams i.e. 23285.3607.2525.937. But when I search for updates, Teams says I 'already have the latest version. Last updated: today'. And when I started Teams this morning, I did see a message announcing that my status would be visible on the task bar again. I've restarted Teams and even restarted my computer but I still only see 'NEW' on the task bar.
I don't see this in Windows 10.
