Loud Beeping when Muted in a MS Teams Call

When using my Aftershokz OpenComm during a call, I hear a loud beeping noise when I mute myself during the call. This beeping only goes away when I unmute. I've contacted Aftershokz, and they've assured me this is due to a recent MS Teams update causing connectivity issues.

I've also read other non-Microsoft forums and realize this is apparently an issue since 2021 with MS Teams and multiple brands of headphones/headsets. However, it only recently started for me today, April 18, 2022.

Is Microsoft doing anything to solve this issue? Is there a solution to this?

It seems to be making many users upset and frustrated. I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't addressed this yet.

    Thanks RickRussell_CA, that makes a lot of sense and completely explains what's going on.

    I don't see MS fixing this either, but I'm not springing £50 for an overpriced BT dongle. That's just outrageous.

    Hopefully, we won't see Web Apps able to mute the mic at the OS level, so the workaround to use the Teams WebApp will continue to work in the long term.

    It's not a question of changing the gain, it's allowing the mic to indicate that it's muted.

    Imagine you have a mic on your camera or similar, and when it's muted, it turns an LED on. Lots of microphones do this. If you don't explicitly mute the microphone, it won't know to turn its LED on. The microphone can't know if the app is internally muting the audio stream.

    So, what Microsoft are doing is correct - if you click "Mute" in the app, then the app tells the microphone that it's muted, and the microphone can show that it's muted. That's very good behaviour.

    What's not good is to do a loud beeping noise every 5 seconds to remind the user that they are muted. That's the actual problem... and that's Shokz's firmware, not Microsoft propagating the mute state from the app to the microphone.

    I host about 20 / 30 meetings a week. I pray a fix is coming, this is absolutely maddening.
