MS Teams Helper using up >100% of CPU MacBook

Since the latest update of MS Teams (current version 1.3.00.9271 updated on 07/05/20) on a MacBook (early 2015), every time I now join a Teams call, the Microsoft Teams Helper is using >100% of CPU and causing the laptop to overheat. I have disabled the GPU acceleration as seen on some other message boards but this has no impact, and could do with a fix for this ASAP.

    Another upside—I don't have to run my in-home white noise generator any more to emulate the HVAC system at the office. Teams ramps up my fans and keeps them going. And just like when the HVAC at the office shuts down at 7pm and the silence is eerie, so it is when I end a Teams call.

    I especially appreciate the noise level that comes through from a presenters mic as well—adds to the collective ambience and I nearly feel like I'm back in my cubicle.

    Silence is overrated.

    2019 MBPro, i9, 32gb RAM. Two things are guaranteed to run my fans at full RPM. Rendering from my 3D app, pushing all 8 cores to 100%, and MS Teams.

    Totally agree Dirk. Have been living with same.

    Decided to make lemonade with these lemons. Am now cooking breakfast eggs on laptop during our morning meetings. Gas heating bills have also decreased as well, which is great seeing as how gas prices have been going.

    Microsoft, any way you can make it run a bit hotter? I like a crispy fried egg and it's almost, but not quite there.

    Same Problem.
    Macbook Pro 2019, 16 GB Ram, 2,3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9.
    Software up to date.

    Teams Heavy user and my ventilator never stops running on teams calls.

    Hi all,

    wanted to give an update on this.

    For me the low power mode didn't make much difference.

    Turbo boost switcher only partially worked, it stopped it from completely melting but still high cpu, and cumbersome to use + slowed down the entire mac.

    What finally worked for me was to install Microsoft Edge browser for mac, then run teams inside Edge, by logging in to teams.microsoft.com

    Does not overuse CPU even with turbo boost enabled.

    (safari and chrome didn't work as well)

    Lucily my next job will not involve using microsoft teams.

    I found a new solution that has been working for me the past two weeks. YMMV but I wanted to share it here to see if it helps others:

    Turn on Low Power Mode

    I know that sounds obvious, but it worked and I haven't noticed any performance degradation with my high power apps (compilers, renderers, etc). I can now use MS Teams without my fans turning on and sounding like a jet engine. This solution includes when I am in video meetings using my camera/mic and even when I have more than one monitor hooked up.

    To enable Low Power Mode, go to System Preferences -> Battery -> Power Adapter -> Low Power Mode

    Tech Specs -

    Device: MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

    macOS Version: 12.1 (Monterey)

    Microsoft Teams Version: 1.4.00.29478

    Hope this solution works for other folks as well
