how do I fix desktop and file folders that do not refresh automatically?

If you are using Windows 11, you can try this:
- Open File Explorer
- On the top bar, click the right most "..." to open more option
- Click "option"
there are three tabs on the top, what you have to do is to click the "restore to default" button on each tab.
remember to click "apply".

Regrettably, I have no such short cut, and, I continue to suffer this issue, along with a new Windows Explorer issue. 😖
I was able to solve the issue of the Windows 10 Desktop not refreshing automatically by deleting a "Desktop - Shortcut"
that had been created/added to the C:\Users\User Name\OneDrive folder. I have no idea how this shortcut came to be present in this folder. I deleted this shortcut from this folder and then ran OneDrive to update the cloud storage. Once this was done the Windows 10 Desktop began to refresh normally. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread for helping me find a solution that worked for me.
Uninstalling OneDrive didn't work for me, but Creative Cloud did. Adobe Creative Cloud has a similar file sync folder which was causing this issue for me, since I no longer subscribe to it I just uninstalled it but hopefully there is a way to just remove the folder without uninstalling it if anyone uses Adobe products.
This may be the latest reason for this. I had this problem in the past and it started recently to occur again. Did I map any network drives? No. But what did happen, strange as it sounds was to boot up an old laptop that had mappings. I had noticed that two new mappings for that computer appeared when I open Exploder. The problem is that I can't delete the devices. Perhaps I'll have to turn on the old laptop and have it up and running for this PC to delete the network mappings. Sounds like **** but... It's Microsoft.
Also, this sounds a bit scary to just see these old mappings show up out of the blue. But after some thought I suppose it probably isn't that scary as I had authorized the computer in the past to access network shares. Just a reminder to remove sharing from old PCs when no longer using them. Something I'm sure that I will never remember to do.
In addition and a bit off-topic, if your problem is that file dates/time are no longer sorting correctly, make sure that the column is set to "Date Modified" and it hasn't been changed to simply "Date". I remember this happening from time to time with no explanation.
