How to Cancel Windows 11 update?

I'm so happy you answered my question. It is interesting in that I'm not the only one asking this question now, but the answers are all over the map.

I had assumed it would be going back into the registry, but was unclear as to what the new entries should be.

I hate the idea of going to Windows 11, but I see no options after end of life for Windows 10. I figured I stand a better change of upgrading in order to save most of my current programs that I have installed rather than just purchase a brand new lap top. My Dell Laptop is only 4 years old.

Please keep me in the loop as we get closer to that moment of reckoning and I'll do the same.

Hi, Portland. I think that when Windows 10 is no longer supported, and we must take the plunge to Windows 11, what we would do is follow the same registry edit instructions, just changing the input at these last two steps (as copied from Rodrigo Quieroz's original instructions):

"Again on the right side of the screen , right click > New > String Value > and name it ProductVersion , double click it and set Value Data to Windows 10" Set the value to Windows 11 instead

"Again on the right side of the screen , right click > New > String Value > and name it TargetReleaseVersionInfo , double click it and set Value Data to 21h2" Set to whatever the latest version is at the time you are doing this. Right now, for example, it appears to be 23H2.

Once we do that, I think Windows 11 will download whenever we next update. I think it may also be true that if you skip the version step, erasing the version you had for Windows 10 but not adding a new version, then you will automatically get whatever is the current version of Windows 11 and any updates as they come out. It's like filling in the version creates a ceiling of sorts, beyond which updates will not install, so leaving the ceiling off lets you get Windows 11 updates as they come out. My plan is to try that first and only edit the registry to include a version if that does not work.

I'm the original author of the this question. I did successfully edit the registry and set it to Windows 10 Home (that is what it always was). The Target version is set at 22H2.

Windows 11 installation has never shown its face again on my computer. However, in the near future when support for Windows 10 comes to end of life in 2025, what changes do I make to my registry so that when the time comes I can update my computer to Windows 11?

Lynn Christy: I'm hoping you can jump in on this as you and I were deep into stopping Windows 11 and did edit our registry.

I had to do this with one of my computers and it worked fine. Here is another article that says the same thing. Note Step 3 in particular.

Disable Windows 11 Upgrade Using DisableOSUpgrade Registry Key

1. Type regedit in RUN or Start search box and press Enter. It’ll open Registry Editor.

2. Now go to following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows 3. Create a new key under Windows key and set its name as WindowsUpdate. If the key is already present, skip to next step.

4. Now in right-side pane, create a new DWORD DisableOSUpgrade and set its value to 1

Yeah that option won't work for me. The registry entry isn't there...so how do I stop this from happening? Win 10 22H2
