Since last Windows 10 automatic update done on 8 PCs (KB5016616, KB5012170 & KB890830) 4 PCs are now showing "task host window is stopping background tasks" on shutdown.

Does anyone know what caused this?

Thanks

Tried this as well. Restart works immediate time but proceeding times after that you need to constantly keep switching. But not 100% assurance. And most certainly not a fix but a consistent workaround.

I tried that (for the third time!). It only works if you do the shut down very soon (2-3 minutes) after the restart.

To demonstrate this I went through your solution, then did MyPC >docs, MyPC>Music etc a few times, then tried shutdown.

    The problem was back again.

I seem to have fixed the problem, not sure if it works for others. I went to the Power Options and changed the Power Plan to a different one, done a restart (forced "restart anyway") and after restart changed to my original Power Plan and repeated the restart. The problem seem to disappear. See if it works for you.

Latest update KB5016688 did not solve the problem

Why am I not surprised. Had 2 shut downs OK. Every possible start up items disabled. sfc scannow found a couple of bits - then it did it again. No further forward. Don't want to do reinstal as possibly probably have same problem as it updates etc. None of the 'tips' on here found or solved the basic error.
