Game crash with "The description for Event ID 0 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found"

Hello!

A few games are crashed after a few minutes of gaming. The mouse got stuck for a few seconds after I'm able to alt+tab but the game process is not responding.

I found the following errors and warnings in the Windows event logs:

    Do you by any chance have a factory overclocked gpu? I have an Inno 3D card which is factory OC.

    For me the only solution (workaround really) that has worked and I am now having this for over 2 years is the following:

    Open the NVIDIA control panel (usually located next to the clock in your system tray, bottom right)

    Click on "Help" in the top row and click "Debug mode"

    What this does, it downclocks your card to the founders edition specs. You would have to enable this every time after a reboot.

    The reasoning I have found for this is that ever since one of the driver/windows updates, most games are unable to handle the factory OC cards and will crash after a while. Sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes 1 hour.

    This error is caused by a new feature called HAGS that's enabled by default on Windows 11, disable it as follows:

    Click on Start > Settings > System > Display. Scroll down on the right, and click on Graphics for Windows 11 or Graphic settings for Windows 10. Windows 11 users need to next click on Change default graphics settings. Toggle the Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) option off.

    YES, THIS IS THE ANSWER!

    I suffered with this problem for 3.5 years before finding the same solution a few months ago.

    Again, it was a faulty DIMM stick (RAM).

    Just removed 1 stick, rebooted the PC, then powered off, swapped the sticks and booted again.

    Presto! PC wouldn't boot at all with one of the sticks removed, but worked perfectly fine with only the other one, and no crashes. 1 bad DIMM stick.

    Bought new DRAM about 3 months ago and never had the issue again.

    TL;DR: CHECK YOUR RAM.

    Edit 2022.12.11: typos corrected. Still working fine.

    I'm experiencing a similar issue with crashes in certain games. I have also experienced a few graphical artifacts with no game running lately, which led me to suspect that my GPU was failing. The crashes have been occurring randomly for about a month. All of these events are associated with the event message:

    The description for Event ID 0 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found

    I will try to perform a clean driver install from safemode using DDU and a subsequent scf scan. If this does not resolve the issue, I'm sending the GPU back for testing.

    I would like to know whether someone else have experienced issues like graphical artifacts, flickering brightness (in certain games) and image freezing? These are common signs of a failing GPU, however my GPU is only one month old!
