cumulative updates fail to install. Both KB5018410 and KB5016616 failed on installation.

My computer is a DELL Optiplex 3020. Both recent cumulative updates (KB5018410 and KB5016616) have failed on installation. The code is 0x800f0845. I have tried all the suggested things to try to get the update to go through up to an in-place update. All other updates go through with no problem. Just the cumulative updates. I have version 21H2 build 19044.1826.

    Installed a wd nvme ssd to replace dying sata ssd in a pc with Z170 motherboard. Had weeks of frustration trying to install 20H1 windows 10 met with endless WHEA uncorrectable errors bluescreen. Started to suspect hardware faults.

    Managed to find the very first windows 10 version build 10240 iso in backup drive. Installed it and system was super stable. After windows update installed 20H2 windows 10, stability started to go downhill. Plug in usb flashdrive will cause WHEA uncorrectable errors bluescreen. Windows update cumulative update and .net framework failed with 0x800f0845 error code. Then saw this thread and inspired by Mike Pisano (mpisano) post about microsoft stornvme.sys, found people talking about forcing windows to load intel nvme driver instead of microsoft nvme driver.

    Download and extract content of f6flpy-x64.zip from intel. Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) User Interface and Driver

    In device manager, right click standard nvm express controller then update driver>browse my computer for drivers>let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer,>have disk and point it to the extracted folder. select intel nvme controller.

    Able to complete windows update. However, system still not very stable. Still encountered dpc watchdog violation error bluescreen randomly when pluged in usb flashdrive or with windows 10 settings. Still better than endless WHEA uncorrectable error.

    Edit: Realised the intel nvme driver is for intel Rapid Storage Technology. There is another intel nvme driver for client ssd but that is no longer able to download. Found that solidigm nvme driver works too. Newer driver date, single .sys instead of intel driver with multiple .exe and .sys.

    Same exact problem here, also a Dell with code 0x800f0845. Not even an in-place upgrade will fix the issue.

    I believe it has to do with incompatible drivers/BIOS on these machines. Microsoft of course is not going to look at these issues though.

    I will now recommend that you try to repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade again to fix the system.

    After successfully installing the In-place upgrade, try to manually download and install the update again.

    Please try the following.

    1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

    Open Settings => System => Troubleshoot => Other troubleshooters =>Windows Update => Run.

    1. Use Command Prompt commands.

    => Open Command prompt as Administrator.

    => Type/copy the commands below , enter 1 by 1.

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop cryptSvc

    net stop bits

    net stop msiserver

    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

    net start wuauserv

    net start cryptSvc

    net start bits

    net start msiserver

    => Close the Command Prompt and restart your computer then try to update again.

    1. Use System File Checker to check and fix corrupted system files which may be the cause of the issue. Please refer to the link.
