Cannot install Windows 11 - Error 0xc1900101

I am trying to install the new Windows 11 update from Windows Update, but I keep getting error 0xc1900101.

The installation starts, and after a couple restarts, it says:

" Attempting to recover installation "

" Undoing changes made to your computer "

And then I am greeted with error 0xc1900101 on Windows Update.

    I appreciate your comment, but. I have 750 GB of data and 30 applications. I am not about to bring my computer back to the state it was when I bought it, just to enjoy the new features of Windows 11.

    I will wait for Microsoft to enhance their installation program so it isn’t bothered by Silly things like applications and data and drivers and peripheral devices!

    I am in the same camp as you. I can scrub my computer completely clean and start all over again. I am not inclined to do that because I expect Microsoft get their stuff together enough for it to work the way it should. I have been receiving windows 10 updates for many years without a single issue. Now that windows 11 is out in the preview mode that seems to have perplexed the Win11 developers.

    Got this one too. First with the normal upgrade process, before installing Win10 21H2, then again after installing Win10 21H2 and running the Windows 11 Installation Assistant. Seems like it downloaded the dang thing all over again. Failed again in much the same way. Then decided to uninstall some apps that were a bit uncommon, like a Sony DPT-RP1 network based file sync tool ("Digital paper app") and BatteryBar Pro (with its no longer supported toolbar). This time the Installation Assistant made it through.

    Not exactly a smooth process. You'd hope that MS would have a list of apps that seem to cause problems, and could prompt the user "Hey, do you really need these apps? If not, please uninstall before attempting to update." Or at least prompt us with possible issues right after the failure, rather than having users scour the internet for tips.

    I have a better idea. Microsoft should execute that patch so the rest of us don’t have to suffer their laziness..

    How I worked around the problem:

    • I disconnected all other drives than the main SSD drive
    • Then did a clean install of the latest Windows 10 ISO available
    • Before any drivers were able to be installed I subscribed to the dev channel immediately and installed Windows 11 as soon as possible (before other updates). Some updates managed to get co-installed while Windows 11 was downloading, but I tried to minimise the number of them that got installed.
    • This eventually led to me being able to complete a successful installation.

    I suspect that '0xc1900101' error is related to either:

    • "Incompatible" (arbitrary or otherwise) drivers on a "thick" installation (i.e. with many updates)
    • The installer confusing which is the main drive
