Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I've been having crash issues for months now with no solution. I've been able to narrow it down to a windows issue but no solution seems to be available.

At random points during gaming (COD Warzone) the video card driver stops working and then immediately recovers. I get a black screen for around 5-10 seconds and that causes my game to crash. It is extremely frustrating.

I have done clean installs of Windows 10 64bit, tested with both NVidia and AMD GPU's, various video card drivers (up to 1 year old), and various other checks and setting changes.

I'm hoping that someone can please respond to help me figure out what is causing this issue because it is extremely frustrating.

Thank you,

Gregg

Hey everyone,

I have finally fixed this issue fixed on my PC. I'm so damn happy 😅

Changing my input from DisplayPort to HDMI resolved it. This fixes the crashing completely, even with two sticks of memory in dual-channel mode at full speed 3200Mhz.

This got me curious, since I saw that using HDMI limits my refresh rate to 100Hz. So, I switched back to DisplayPort but forced it to run at 120Hz instead of the full 144Hz. This also runs flawlessly with dual-channel memory and IMO confirms that 144Hz (combined with certain memory configurations) is somehow the causing the crashes.

I've ordered a new DisplayPort cable to see if it resolves the issue at 144Hz, but even if it doesn't I'll be happy with 120Hz since the 5600XT rarely gets above 120 FPS in games I play at 1440p anyway!

I hope this helps some of you.

EDIT: Sorry to hear about your new issue Tyler. I am on the latest Window 10 update and AMD drivers (I now have the full AMD Overlay etc installed) and have not run into that problem.

EDIT 2: New DisplayPort cable has the exact same issue at 144Hz. I can live with 120Hz so it's all good and no more crashes :)

EDIT 3: I other solutions posted online to get 144Hz working. Summary is here: https://evanshortiss.com/amd-driver-memory-lock-timeout

Hi and thanks for reaching out. My name is William. I'm a Microsoft Windows Certified Professional and Systems Administrator. I'll be happy to help you out today.

There is a lot of chatter about this, but to say it is a Windows issue is speculation. Since It is happening on two different GPUs, the issue is likely with the game engine. There is a suggestion here to reduce screen refresh settings to 60Mhz: https://support.activision.com/community/s/ques...

There is also a more extensive thread on reddit here: https://www.reddit.com/r/CODWarzone/comments/fg...

And this article mentions that there is a fix in Windows 10 2004 release so it may be worth moving to 2004 if you are not there already: https://www.onetwogamer.com/call-of-duty-warzon....

Only issue I have with this is, I play Valorant, Fortnite, Sea of Thieves, and this happens to me as well with ALL those programs. It even shuts down my Streamlabs while I'm in the middle of streaming.

Thanks for this fix suggestion. Going to test it out for a week and post again with the results.

It's interesting that both your 2 gpu's and my 2 gpu's were all RX...though the OP said he tried nvidia gpu's as well and still had the problem.

Edit: Changing my refresh rate from 144Hz to 120Hz fixed the issue. I don't know why, but I'm happy :)

Hi Gregg, just want to let you know I have a 5600 XT and have been having the same problem. I see LiveKernelEvent 117 and 141, then LiveKernelEvent 144 in logs for the reboot after the crash. I tried DDU, and even reinstalled Windows a few days ago, but the issue persists.

Built the system in May, and had a crash here and there, but the crashes went from less than one a week to daily around the end of September or beginning of October. This coincided with a Windows, AMD, and GPU VBIOS update (via MSI Dragon Center).

These updates caused image artefacts, followed by a crash to desktop. Usually a full system crash happended shortly after, or I had to force a reset since the system was frozen. Flashing the 2020-03-09 VBIOS on this page seems to stop the image flickering/corruption but I still get occasional crash.

My system also reports unexpected shutdown almost everyday despite the fact I shutdown using the Start menu as you should...

What's interesting is that they seem to almost exclusively happen in PUBG and Borderlands 3. I don't think I've had a single crash in the Witcher 3 or Stardew Valley.

    MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max

    MSI 5600 XT Gaming X

    Corsair Vengance 3466 CL16 RAM

    Seasoninc 500W Gold PSU

    Hey there!

I'm in a brand new notebook Acer Nitro 5 w/ ryzen 5, vega 8 and geforce GTX 1650. Played few games for now (DOTA2, Divinity OS2), but I had the trouble while in Teams too, sharing a presentation. Last Thursday started at 10AM, crashed 10h54, finished 12. Back again 2PM, crashed twice (2h30 and 3h32) finished 4.

Checking in Event Viewer, it was a Security event ID 4624 (logon), ID 4672 (special logon), THEN System event ID 4101 (video driver amdkmdag stopped responding and successfully recovered [roughly translated from Brazilian Portuguese]) followed by ID 267 (touch keybord/hardware quality control successfull verification), twice ID 10016 (unauthorized application to COM server with CLSID, Application event ID 9027 (desktop window manager), ID 1000 (error on C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\CNext\Radeonsoftware.exe; *full log at the end).

The most annoying detail is that after video and apps recovery, I'm disconnected from Team's call.
