I am trying to update windows to 22h2 in an attempt to troubleshoot another issue i am having (games crashing when booting up dx12 with shaders with "out of video memory" error, same games work on dx11 though) and i have tried multiple times to update to 22h2 but it continuously fails. Windows will download the update, restart, install the update up to 25% and crash with blue screen showing an error with NTFS.sys i believe. So maybe the drive is corrupted by i've do so much to try to fix that.

i have tried to the SFC scannow steps, chkdsk /f c:,

i've tried 2 separate m.2 drives booting win 11 on them each with a genuine microsoft win 11 usb/key,

i've done multiple clean installs on both drives

i've formatted/deleted the info on drives to do a clean install

i've tried multiple graphics cards for dx12/shader issue, same problem, so not the cards.

i've rolled back gpu drivers, reinstalled drivers, used DDU as well for that.

i've updated all my drivers in general.

installed cc cleaner to check rootkey/scan computer

installed malwarebytes to check for viruses/etc.

i've tried different ram, tried different ram slots and combinations like single slot, dual channel, quad channel

reapplied thermal paste on the cpu

removed/installed cmos battery

messed with shader cache in both nvidia and tried multiple pagefile configurations for virtual memory

tries start up repair which ends with something like (unable to fix the issue)

i think there's more that i've tried but ive been at this for about 12 work hours over the last couple of weeks with no success with my DX12/shader crashing issue and now this windows update issue.

My system specs are:

msi 4090 gaming trio

32gb 5600mhz corsair ram

1000w msi psu

asus z690-e wifi mobo

13900k processor

i'm desperate for answers for both the windows update issue and the games with dx12 crashing immediately at boot with preloading shaders like Hogwarts, callisto protocol, dead space remastered, kena, MW2, etc.

    alright, so...

    The i5 processor, a brand new 1tb m.2 drive, new motherboard with my 4090 is working great. no issues so far.

    But this still does not solve the problem im having with the 13900k, the 2tb m.2 drives, and the asus z690-e motherboard. Thats about 1500 dollars worth of computer equipment that is not allowing me to play dx12 games with preloaded shaders.

    So today, i bought another computer case, a heatsink, another 1tb m.2 drive, and connected to the 13900k and the asus mobo. I installed windows 10 the same way i did on the new i5 build, and i am STILL getting the out of video memory issue. dx12 games are STILL crashing...

    Is it possible for a processor to be corrupted? or the motherboard?

    its so strange that those components could be causing an out of video memory error or crash the games in general...

    well i just installed the i5 13600k processor and the new m.2 drive at the same time. so far, i am able to preload callisto protocol with no issues. no video memory leak, using the 1080ti. now i need to put the 4090 in there to see what happens.

    if everything is good after that, then i need to figure out if it was a drive corruption on the 980 2tb drives or if the 13900k was the issue. so after the 4090 gpu test, if all is good, im going to swap the m.2 drives and keep the i5 in there to see what happens.

    *update 1*

    callisto loaded up just fine on the 1080ti and the 4090.

    i am installing dead space and hogwarts to see if they load up on the i5. if everything works right, im going to swap the drives and what happens. all for the sake of troubleshooting, hopefully this doesnt mess up the i5 processor somehow.

    *update 2*

    alright so hogwarts works on the new drive and i5 processor. i swapped back to the 2tb drive and callisto worked just fine but hogwarts has the same video error message and dead space wont boot up at all. very strange.

    my next step is to try the i9 processor with the new drive.

    So i tried the i9 with the new m.2 drive. I started with hogwarts and the game loaded fine. After that, i tried deadspace but received a new error:

    I believe this error is a denuvo error that is not related to my issues and instead, is an issue from denuvo stopping me from playing the game temporarily because of the many times i loaded it up on different hardware. this happened on callisto as well and also on my 9900k system, so its not something i am worried about yet... However, i then for the hell of it, tried hogwarts again, and it had the video error show up again.... Which doesn't make much sense because a few minutes earlier, it loaded the game just fine.

    So now i am thinking that both the i9 processor and the 2tb drives are just corrupted or theres some kind of issue with 1 or both of those devices in general. I need to take a break for now but i think the next step is to buy 1 more m.2 drive and install windows on that and use the i9 with it to see if i get the same errors.

    I must think there is something primary to your installs that is causing the same problem with different video cards. Lowering the resolution, should at least made some type of difference.

    Have you ever run a Benchmark on your Video performance?

    I have tried in 4k, 1440p, 1080p, 720p.

    I have tried the custom virtual memory size multiple times but also, i just tried it again after you sent the link and reset the computer, same issue:

    Hogwarts does seem to have a known issue with memory leaks and out of video memory issues, however, my issue is not limited to hogwarts, its with any game that has dx12 and preloaded shaders.

    I have tried the other games without starting hogwarts, same issue. i have reset the computer and tried only callisto. tried only deadspace, same errors.

    i have the new i5 13600k processor and a new m.2 1tb drive that im about to install with win 10.

    do you think i should just try the new drive with the current 13900k processor? or should i do both at the same time? if i try both at the same time and the issue is fixed, i wouldnt know if it was the drive or the processor..... if that even ended up fixing the problem...

    You might look at the link and see if it addresses anything on your system.

    And what resolution and refresh rate are you running. Have you tried lowering the resolution?

    Edit: It seems Hogwarts is suspected of having a memory leak which might be filling up your available memory. If that were to be the case, you may have to reboot to run the other games without that error.
