How to stop Windows 11 updates forever?

I've noticed there is no option to stop windows updates: There is only a nonsensical pause option. Even though I set updates to OFF it still updates after some time which is totally not what I need. The thing is my hard ware is really old and I can't risk new updates like the one I got now totally screwed my machine, I can't run any programs anymore they take forever to open now. Please help how do I stop these updates from happening?

I am Ivan, I will help you with this.

You can deactivate the windows update service directly in services .msc, but when deactivating the microsft store system, among others, they stop working without automatic updating.

01: for this, press the shortcut 'Windows + R' and type "services.msc".

02: right-click on “Windows Update” and then go to “Properties”;

03: under “Startup type”, as in the example below, choose the “Disabled” option from the drop-down menu and click “Apply”.

04: finally, restart your computer to complete the procedure and ensure that the search for new updates is disabled.

Caution when disabling windows update is a security risk at your own risk.

    What exactly did you change?

    I know about HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU\NoWindowsUpdate.

    Is this the registry change for Windows 11 as well? I guess I'm sort of hijacking the thread.

    Microsoft has so many challenges. This nonsense that "updates are an integral part of the OS" is sheer blather. going all the way back to "the browser is embedded in the OS nonsense." I might accept the case for home users, but not for Professional or higher. Microsoft really needs to put a nag screen in, but there should be a setting "I know what I'm doing just nag me". Last night my server rebooted taking down 3 IDEs, 4 virtual machines and a staged debug setup.

    There is a place in $ell for the decision makers that forced this. And the funniest part? Aside from the trivial "feature" updates, most of the patches are fixing security holes that never should have been there in the first place. Yeah, I'm annoyed much this morning.

    That's correct. Commencing with Windows 10, regular updates are and will be the single most crucial feature of Windows, so they cannot be permanently stopped. Even if you succeed in breaking your operating system - as some have done - so that updating no longer works, Microsoft has built-in tools to restore updating. (The rest of the broken operating system is not Microsoft's responsibility.)

    Totally NOT correct. I have permanently disabled the auto-update from both my Windows 10 and 11 machines. You cannot deactivate the windows update service directly in services .msc as Ivan stated, it will enable itself again that part is true. You can however create group policies that prevent the system from being able to update as well as changing the registry to permanently disable it.

    I have an iMac, an iPad and an iPhone. Never had the issues that I have had with my Windows laptop. Microsoft has crashed my computer repeatedly with updates that are not compatible with my laptop. I will never purchase another Microsoft product again. Done with them. I suggest all of you do the same.
